planned to be used in our design and implementation: the use of proprietarylanguages like LabVIEW and MATLAB-Simulink and the use of standard programminglanguages. The success of this project in an education and research-oriented experimental facilitywill advance the state of art of education in the fields such as I&M, sensors and controls bycontributing to new experimental concepts, and simulations, and by creating a motivatingenvironment for the engineering practice. The i-Lab set-ups planned to be developed during thisproject are used in both ET undergraduate and graduate courses. They also may be used asmodels for the similar developments in other courses

generalframework for project planning that can be used by students and faculty advisors to outline goalsand objectives of senior design Capstone projects that requires team members to organize anddesign/build the project with limited resources. This paper also describes a capstone projectwhich served as a pilot study for the capstone project course which will be implemented in theDepartment of Engineering Technology in spring 2012 for the Civil and Electronics EngineeringTechnology majors. Electronic Name Tag System project was carried out by the SummerUndergraduate Research Training (SURT) program student during the summer of 2011. Thebasic project requirement was to design and build an Electronic Name Tag using the PIC16C57microcontroller. The main

for Mechanical Engineering students at Northeastern University. The existingexperiments have become dated and in many cases have devolved to demonstrations by theteaching assistants, with little hands on experimentation by the students. This has resulted inseverely decreased student satisfaction with the labs. An extensive redesign was performed todevelop hands-on, open ended lab experiments that allowed students increased control over theoutcome of the experiments. Pre-lab homework assignments require students to develop labprocedures, research sensor specifications, and develop virtual instruments in NationalInstruments’ LabView. A term project required student groups to design and execute ameasurement experiment, presenting their findings
