Because these organizations are comprised of studentsin all classes, freshmen through seniors and even graduate students, students are able towork with other students to study for exams and assist in the understanding of homeworkproblems and course content. D’Alessandro is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Structural Engineering and Materials Pro- gram of Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, Va.). She received both her B.S. and M.S. from Clemson University. Once completing the Ph.D. program at Virginia Tech, D’Alessandro plans to pursue a career in academia to teach and to continue research on concrete structures. She also plans to pursue opportunities with engineering education research and K-12 outreach programs

Ahistogram of the participants’ cumulative academic averages is provided in Figure 4. A student’scumulative academic average is the arithmetic mean of all of the student’s course grades in theircurrent program of study up until the current point in his or her academic career. In this paper,this term will be used synonymously with GPA. For graduate students, this value only includescourses taken within the student’s current graduate program. Since the interviews wereconducted during a Fall term, an exception was made for freshmen students that had not yetcompleted a full academic term. Her teaching emphasizes the roles of engineers as communicators and educators, the foundations and evolution of the engineering education discipline, assessment methods, and evaluating communication in engineering.
