StudentsAbstractThe Study Cycle is a set of guidelines rich with self-regulated learning (SRL) techniques thatenables students to plan, prepare, and enact their studying by focusing on five comprehensivesteps: previewing before class, engaging in class, reviewing after class, holding study sessions, and seeking help as a supplement. This paper reports on initial findings of a qualitative study inwhich a workshop on the Study Cycle was taught to a class of second-year IndustrialEngineering students as an intervention, aiming to understand effects of the module onengineering students’ SRL strategy use in an engineering course. Students self-reported SRLstrategy use in a one-minute paper pre-workshop and two sets of post-workshop reflections. Thispaper examines

Page 26.872.4 curriculum is based on the feedback from variety of stakeholders. It integrates real life experiences into the general classroom.  Up-to-date and effective course content:  Uses multiple methods to systematically gather data about student understanding and ability  Uses student work/data, observations of instruction, assignments and interactions with colleagues to reflect on and improve teaching practice  effectively allocates time for students to engage in hands-on experiences, discuss and process content and make meaningful connections  Highly educated professors who continuously up-to-date the course

. Page 26.310.3BackgroundPrevious work has shown that not just industrial engineering students but all Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students are predominantly active, visual, and sensing learner types2 . However, it is evident that most undergraduateengineering courses are generally taught toward reflective, verbal, and intuitive learnertypes3 . This is in fact the exact opposite of the suggestions made from multiple learningstyle studies4 . Engineering teaching is more focused on theory and mathematical proofsover practical, “real world” applications and experimentation favored by sensing learners 4 .As is suggested by Felder 5 , in order to meet Student Outcome C (SOc) from ABET (SOc:Ability to design a system

. Page 26.149.3The Lean Enterprise Institute founded by Womack 1 (1997) is aiming at developing educationalmethods and workshops to promote training about lean tools. Nontraditional instructionalmethods such as learning-by-doing methods, active and collaborative learning techniques aregetting more popular in the past few years. This trend is mostly reflected by introducing variousphysical simulation or computer games (gamification) and is growing rapidly due to theirpositive impact on learning process [1, 2]. The literature study illustrates a large pool ofeducational simulation games targeting different lean concepts and principles such as pullproduction, one piece flow, Jidoka, 5S, Poka Yoke and waste elimination. collaborativeeducational approaches.Lattuca and Stark’s academic planning model refer to these requirements as purposes andcontent. Additional considerations we took into account that are well reflected in the academicplanning model are instructional resources and processes, both of which were importantconsiderations in our program, especially considering the special issues associated with growinga new program where student enrollment is relatively low. For example, new program had topromote hands-on approaches in courses and outside the university to make it an active anddynamic learning experience. Lectures and in-class assignments had to be supported by Page

, the education provided tostudents can be better adapted to reflect the expectations of industry. It is important to definewhat the industry wants and needs for the current engineering programs9. Many universities areexposing students to manufacturing through senior capstone design courses to offer students witha realistic perspective of industry needs.Another vital area of manufacturing skills needed is within federal government organizations, such as the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy. A report coordinated by theNational Academies indicated that remanufacturing of weapons systems and nuclear systems, aswell as maintaining facilities for the maintenance and production of systems, is a strategic needfor the security of the
