research.IntroductionThe University of Pittsburgh houses the archives of Dick Thornburgh, former Governor ofPennsylvania (1979-1987), Attorney General of the United States (1988-1991), and Under-Secretary General of the United Nations (1993).1 His years in office as Governor coincided withnewly enacted dam safety legislation following the devastating 1977 Johnstown flood, in whichseveral dams failed, most notably, Laurel Run Dam, which claimed 40 lives.2 The efforts of thenewly elected Governor to implement and support the call for greater state oversight of dams inthe Commonwealth was of primary interest and can be related to the importance of public policyon the engineering profession. In engineering education, the ASCE Body of Knowledge (BOK-II)3 and ABET4

the participation of minority group members in an organization.1 Particularlywhen a majority group is highly dominant, these barriers pervade recruitment, retention,advancement, and overall climate; diversity suffers, and the overall effectiveness and health ofthe organization is diminished. Academia has a long history of dominance by men. This hasbeen and remains particularly true in engineering, an example where “inequality regimescontinue to be relatively resistant” to change.2There is a growing body of evidence that men and majority individuals can serve crucial roles tosupport the advancement of women within organizations.3-6 Online gender equity advocacyorganizations, such as Men Advocating Real Change (http://onthemarc.org/home) also

However, due to steep embankments, approaching the river is challengingand has resulted in several ENGR 110 projects to facilitate this educational program.The first project with the GRPC focused on improving access to the river at a site where theriver’s bank had been reinforced with gabions in a tiered system with three levels. The gabions,which are large wire cage “boxes” filled with rocks, are shown in Figure 1. The height of thegabion tiers was difficult for small children to climb up and down and required adults tophysically lift children between the tiers to protect them from falling. The GRPC required asolution that would allow children to safely and quickly navigate the tiers.A team with one mechanical engineering

These studies, which were conducted up until the last months before thebuilding opened in January 2013, helped to answer planning questions, as well as build supportand awareness of the library among faculty and students.1 After the building opened, it quicklybecame apparent that assessment of the effectiveness of the new spaces and the service modelwas needed and as a result, more studies were initiated. He thought this might be a way to engage the studentsmore in the lectures and help them learn more effectively. Given his concerns for increasing theirengagement in class and shifting away from just conveying the content, he began to plan how hewould incorporate more in-class exercises in his class sessions. While still participating in the teaching development group, he began using more problems inclass. In the implementation phase, he would lecture for a little bit and then ask a question or twofor students to think about what had been taught.
