The Air Force needs an ever increasing number of ourgraduates to serve as RPA (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) pilots, and for graduates in general, tounderstand how UAS systems support combat operations. To help students understand thecapabilities and limitations of UAS systems and to help motivate them toward the RPA careerfield, we have developed a comprehensive UAS program ranging from training RPA pilots toperforming research and development for new UAS systems. This paper will highlight both theRPA Airmanship training program and the UAS research program at the U.S. Air ForceAcademy (USAFA), and assess how this comprehensive approach is preparing future RPAleaders. A team ofstudents works together, combining the topics learned during their undergraduate coursework tocomplete a substantial design project. them successfully reintegrate intocivilian society. 1, 2 In 2013, over 1 million student veterans were calculated to use educationalbenefits; a population projected to increase.1 In addition, 1 out of 5 (20%) student veterans incollege major in science, technology, engineering or mathematic (STEM) fields.3 Research onstudent veterans’ transition into civilian society is critical at a time when higher education isserving as a critical medium for reintegration of this growing non-traditional student population. Several scholars found that a constructive element in military veterans’ integration intocivilian society is college enrollment.4, 5 Integration into civilian society is far from a seamlessand smooth adjustment for many veterans.5
