electrical andcomputer engineering (ECE) department. The first, ECE 102, requires the student to solveengineering problems using MATLAB. The follow-on course introduces the C language. Tomake programming less abstract and to establish a real-life connection, we use MATLAB forinterfacing with a data acquisition device called LabJack. Students use MATLAB’s integrateddevelopment environment to write scripts that control the LabJack.This environment has enabled students to participate in some interesting hands-on projects thatcombine problem-solving, programming, and interfacing. students to weigh trade-offs betweenresponsiveness and excessive motion. In order to assess the value of collaboration in thesequizzes, we contrast student gains on one scenario-based quiz completed individually to thosecompleted collaboratively. We evaluated pre-test performance and conceptual growth using avalidated concept inventory [1]. Students also completed a pre/post measure of their abilities toco-regulate their work as members of a group. We found that students showed improved co-regulation abilities, performed lowest on the individually completed quiz, and that the studentswho began with the lowest scores on the concept inventory had comparable outcomes to theirhigher-scoring peers. The relationship formed between peers and faculty has beenshown to be a critical factor for undergraduate students.9 During the first few weeks, the separateteams rarely meet outside of scheduled activities, but this begins to change between weeks 3 – 5.The collaboration meetings encourage the development of rapport between the participants andbetween the participants and the faculty mentors.An additional 30 minutes were reserved each week for professional development.
