necessary and are all planned as part of the current project.Additionally, RCBC’s Workforce Development Institute and the Burlington County WorkforceDevelopment Board allow for the streamlined interaction between the college and industrypartners. This collaboration allows for the aligning of local, state, and federal resources underone umbrella. The WDI provides a unified, integrated workforce development system forBurlington County to identify and provide skills, training, and the education needed for theworkforce of today and tomorrow. The WDI diligently works to help prepare individuals foracademic success, for employment, and to gain critical new career skills meeting the needs ofindustry. The WDI accomplishes its mission through a mix of

Undergraduates (REU) programs shows that 91% of these research experiences are provided tojunior and senior students21. Developing successful research programs is particularly challengingin community colleges, most of which do not have on-going research programs. Establishingcollaborations between research universities and community colleges is key to engaging studentsin research early in college. This paper is a description of how a small engineering program in a Hispanic-Serving communitycollege has developed a research internship program that is specifically designed for communitycollege students. The paper will also highlight the results of the first year of implementation of theprogram and future plans for improvement.2. Overview of ASPIRES Program

; Atwater, 2005). Also found to be important in previous research arefamily support, especially for Latino students (Amaya & Cole, 2001; Cole & Espinosa, 2008;Russel & Atwater, 2005), undergraduate research opportunities (Kinkead, 2003; Chang,Sharkness, Hurtado & Newman, 2014), and advising to clarify school or career plans (Hurtado,Cabrera, Lin, Arellano & Espinosa, 2009). Students also appear to persist and transfer when theythink of themselves and others (e.g. faculty) recognize them as “science people” (Carlone &Johnson, 2007), and when they consider science as an important part of their self-identity(Chang, et al. 2011; Espinosa, 2011). A welcoming campus racial climate is also important(Hurtado et al. 2007) as is

to align its engineering program with the engineering programsoffered by the surrounding area four-year institutions [3], [4]. At the same time, this college’sengineering faculty made every effort to provide the highest quality education for our students (5).A previous ASEE paper [6] described a new partnership, called “Re-Energize,” that is expected tohelp several two-year colleges develop their own research capabilities in renewable energy incollaboration with Texas State University. The Re-Energize program plans to establish a creative research and development (R&D) andprofessional development (PD) ecosystem. This ecosystem will empower institutions of highereducation who prepare students in engineering and engineering technology in

states have experienced amore than 50% change in Hispanic population between 2000 and 2011 U.S. Census,31 and thetop 10 fastest growing Hispanic states experienced a more than 100% change in Hispanicpopulation during the same period, ranging from a 103% change in Georgia to a 158% change inAlabama Pew.32 Findings from our study may be most relevant and applicable to institutionslocated in fast growing Hispanic states that are strategically planning for the future of highereducation and a shift in student demographics. In addition, as shown in Table 1, 59% of thestudents in this sample would be classified as “vertical” transfer students having spent all or mostof their time at a community college or two-year institution prior to making the

. Scholarships were awarded to four cohorts with five students selected in 2011-2012 (Cohort1), seven students selected in 2012-2013 (Cohort 2), twelve students selected in 2013-2014 (Cohort3), and twelve students selected in 2014-2015 (Cohort 4). The scholarship was limited to foursemesters of financial support at an average $3,750 per semester with the exception of Cohort 1.Initially, the plan was have all scholars in each cohort begin the program in the fall semester. Asthe associates degree program was implemented at BRCC, approximately the same number ofBRCC students were on track to transfer to LSU fall and spring semester. Thus, the scholarshipswere awarded each semester.Cohort 1 (2011-2012)The first cohort of five students received the Pathway

controls to implement these technologies effectively. Let’s briefly survey these broadapplication areas. Automotive Infotainment systems are evolving to encompass the concept ofthe “connected vehicle”. Besides the classic in-car radio entertainment system with CD playersand MP3 compatibility, today’s vehicles are able to receive satellite entertainment and globalpositioning system (GPS) signals, as well as, the traditional terrestrial AM and FM stations.Vehicles equipped with “OnStar” or similar type plans utilize the cellular telephone system tocommunicate and now provide emergency, security, navigation, and Internet connectivity4. Incar Wi-Fi hot spots are now available and most cars come with an information cluster display(LCD screen) that

. Universities have offered discipline-specific residentialprograms for some time now, with science and engineering programs being included in thisservice 30. These programs house engineering students, with a particular emphasis on women andunderrepresented minorities, in common residence halls with planned academic events and enrollstudents in the same courses together 30. These programs appear to be conducive to academicsuccess for students by providing an environment that is more immersive in their discipline.Additionally, living in a community like this would also appear to create an easier environmentto seek help from peers and/or facilitate more opportunities for group study. The transition into college can be a challenging experience for any

workshopparticipants. Given the limited number of locations available that offer this certification, ourhope is that this training will pay off in the form of increased participation at workshop events inthe future.Another important lesson learned by the two partnering institutions this year was that all dutiesbetween the parties need to be clearly delineated and understood. While all grant deliverableswere completed as planned, there was some confusion as to which specific pieces of curriculumwere to be developed by Bay College and which pieces were to be developed by Michigan TechUniversity. This led to a certain amount of frustration and duplication of effort, so a meetingwas scheduled at the beginning of year two to very clearly outline the expected
