the responsibilities that come with that role. One way to address this apparent shortcoming is to continue to refine the design of the stand-alone course, finding a better balance between the design task and the ethical considerations thatweave through it. We noted above that we placed a great deal of trust in the structure of the workin the course, and in the scaffolding we provided, to prompt students to connect design decisionswith ethical values. The self-reported data suggest this trust was not altogether misplaced, but thatwe may need to do more to foster an understanding of role responsibility and its importance in ourstudents’ future careers. writing centers for 20 years; she currently serves as editor of The Writing Center Journal, the primary research journal of the International Writing Centers Association. Several contributions to collections have expandeda career-long theme of work that combines understanding writing practices and students’ learn-ing of writing with collaboration and co-authoring. One chapter, “Creativity in the Writing Center,”written with Elizabeth Boquet, appears in a 2009 award winning collection, Creative Approaches toWriting Center Work. Her interest in creativity extends to other fields as well, including engineering.16

Furthermore, it has been shown that indus-try enhancement through the use of problem-based learning (PBL) fosters a modern environmentthat prepares students for the realities of their chosen careers in the Architecture, Engineering, andConstruction (AEC) field (Solnosky et al. 2013). Multi-disciplinary teams provide an excellent way to promote integration that allows for morecomplex projects to be undertaken (Adams 2003; Salas et al. 2008). Capstone courses furtherprovide a comprehensive evaluation of students’ prior knowledge that is applied to real projectsthrough individual and/or team based structures (Davis 2002; Jenkins et al. 2002). These systemsprovide excellent mechanisms for developing new leaders amongst students once they
