Many publications [1, 2, 4, 7, 13, 15, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, and 25] report engineeringprojects in the same general area. Mathematical and physical aspects of model rocketry arereported in references 3, 6, 14, 16, 19, and 31. This paper describes a successfull implementationof PBL in an introduction class using the conversion of chemical energy into propulsion as itsfocus instead of the flight based focus found in earlier publications. Creating classroom cultures where students feel included andsupported is crucial for students’ sense of belonging, identities as scientists and engineers,learning, and persistence in STEM [4]–[9]. Through creating inclusive environments in ourclasses, we can help our students learn to engage in effective, respectful, and equitablecollaboration.
