Despite all the challenges, we were motivated and determined in this initiative inthe College of Engineering and Technology at Western Carolina University (WCU), inspired bythe student transformation during a trip and the mutual mentoring among faculty members whoshare the same passion. This paper shares mentoring and coping strategies for faculty memberswho are interested in offering faculty-led courses, especially the assessment-driven course designto achieve student learning objectives. The key to succeed is to be flexible, patient, andcollaborative.Global learning has shifted from an option to a priority, and teaching effectiveness is

This also adds to the difficulty of enforcing resiliency of the power system to majorevents, as required by Presidential Policy Directive 21 [10]. The students in this program seek tofamiliarize themselves with and help address challenges such as renewable energy integration, including distributed intelligence, resilience, control, management, planning, and operation.Workforce shortage is also a hurdle in successful implementation and operation of the smart grid. Many of the current power engineering workforce retire or are eligible for retirement in the nextdecade [11], [12].Compared to the United States, many European countries have a more mature experience inutilization of

: cultivating student motivation in the interdisciplinary and international contextAbstractThe National Science Foundation (NSF) Integrative Graduate Education and ResearchTraineeship (IGERT) Program: Global Traineeship in Sustainable Electronics” brought togetheran interdisciplinary group of students to study the environmental, economic, and societal aspectsof the global electronics lifecycle. There were three cohorts altogether, but the dynamics of eachgroup were substantially different. This third cohort actively sought additional experiencesoutside the original planned courses and trips. The aim of this work is to glean insight into whatand how specific curriculum design may promote the learning experiences in which students takeinitiative beyond

communications. Rubric scores will allow for comparisons between communication skills demonstrated at the beginning and end of the program. 8. Qualitative analysis of mentor feedback: The program instructors will conduct a comparative analysis of written feedback given by mentors at the beginning of the program and the end of the program. The evaluation plan includes opportunities to gather formative data and to understand students’perspectives of the programs’ impacts, even if those impacts are outside the anticipated ordesired outcomes articulated by the program. Summative and formative evaluation plans inTable 2 shows specifically how the desired learning objectives will be measured through themethods described above

In 2016, the leadership of The Pennsylvania State University(Penn State) developed a strategic plan with six foundations: Enabling Access to Education,Engaging Our Students, Fostering and Embracing a Diverse World, Enhancing GlobalEngagement, Driving Economic Development, and Ensuring a Sustainable Future. Thesestrategic areas of focus embody existing and emerging strengths and opportunities identifiedduring Penn State’s planning process. Supporting themes intersect with college-level unit plansand pull from the human capital, infrastructure, and programs they represent. Penn State’s strategicplan contains five thematic priorities: Transforming Education, Enhancing Health, StewardingOur Planet’s Resources

created the current tensions that are driving new energy planning. Site visits will include research universities, wind turbine manufacturers, geothermal power plants, wind farms, hydro facilities, and solar component manufacturers [14].The level of detail shared on the seminar’s website was largely independent of the hostuniversity. There appeared to be a minimum requirement by each study abroad office, that wasresponded to either loosely or in great detail by the individual faculty member.DiscussionThe primary objective of this project was to learn from global seminars being offered throughUS undergraduate engineering programs. This initial exploration of global seminars providessome helpful guidelines for faculty planning a

. In contrast, disciplines like Civil Engineering are required to have less acceptance ofuncertainty because of the type of work they do [40], [41]. There are is no room for leaving thingsuncertain when designing a building for example. Understanding this is important when trainingstudents on how to collaborate with other engineers. For students with high acceptance ofuncertainty is important to understand that engineers from other disciplines might not becomfortable with not having a clear plan. It is important that they understand how to structure theiracceptance to uncertainty by developing some structured working plans that include deadlines, responsible, and expected solutions for example.Similarly, another dimension that presented

Botswana towards sustainable economicgrowth, global competitiveness, and improved quality of life (Atkinson & Mayo, 2010). On October 1st, 2016 Botswana formed the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research,Science and Technology with the explicitly stated goal of transforming Botswana from aresource-based to a knowledge-based economy. The impetus for such an initiative was set forthin Botswana’s Vision 2036. Set forth in 2016, this new “vision” for Botswana was predicated onthe mapping of a transformative agenda that reflected the aspirations and goals of the nation. Forthis vision to come to fruition it was imperative that Botswana create a strategic plan to help withredefining their resource-based economy to that of a knowledge-based

program early, designing a program structure that facilitatesthese planned research goals, and considering participation of undergraduate versus graduatestudents.IntroductionAlthough developing global competence is important for engineering students to be successful inthe globally connected workforce, many students find it challenging to participate in traditionalstudy abroad programs for financial or scheduling reasons [1]. One type of programming thataddresses these concerns is international research experiences, which not only support thedevelopment of students’ global competencies and technical engineering skills [2], but alsoprovide benefits and opportunities for faculty members who coordinate these experiences. majors. We estimate about 5-10graduating engineers per year out of approximately 100 students currently qualify (or nearlyqualify) for this designation. It is our plan that by creating and promoting this Scholars Program,we will encourage more students to engage in these activities, potentially up to 25-50 students perclass year. To date we’ve had one cohort of nine scholars graduate with the next cohort expectedto complete their requirements this spring. In the rest of this paper we will discuss the history of the program, as well as our experiences todate in administering the program. We are interested in learning how or if this program deepenscultural competency among participants and if the credentialing aspect of the program

theirgovernment. Everything in the business trip was going as planned because, being a Bengali by birth, I knewthe local language and the culture very well. On the last day of negotiation, I was supposed to travel toDacca, the country’s capital to sign some final documents. The meeting was scheduled during the earlymorning hours. So my chauffeur and I woke up very early, and started driving before daybreak. Therewere no traffic jams during those early hours and the drive was smooth without any problem. When wereached the outskirt of Dacca I felt very relaxed thinking that we had arrived just in time to sign those veryimportant final papers of the negotiation. At that very moment my chauffeur slowed down the car andneatly parked it at a safe sidewalk. He

because of the logs? I try to answer the question instead of waiting for the answer even I speak in a low voice. And I will ask other classmates questions I don't understand after class and watch some relevant videos sometimes. After I need to finish the log, I will use the options on the log to plan what I will do in class or after class. For journaling reasons, I tried something I hadn't done before. Because of the participation log, I began to take notes in class and communicate with my classmates about the question that I have. I become more engaged especially out-of-class because I should pay more efforts and time to the course to earn the points for participation log. I have tried to answer the questions asked by teachers in class and as I
