design solution. During the first semester, the students present their research to one another with potential solutions to problems. Faculty act as moderators attempting to keep the students on track, and within some reasonable budget. The big question for this project was whether to use an equatorial3 or altitude azimuth4 design for the telescope’s rotation. The equatorial is a far simpler design for tracking the stars as it only needs to rotate about one axis once it is set up. However, the mechanical issues were far more difficult, and an altitude azimuth arrangement was chosen.
