transfer mixer, a movie night for first-yearmentees, and a coming out day celebration. The EE Diversity Project has served an important, and often under prioritized purpose in the department of Electrical Engineering of pushing for amore inclusive, diverse, and equitable group of future engineers.+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=A third student spoke about speaking out when she felt disrespected in a happy and inclusiveway:+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=As a fourth-year electrical engineering student, I have interacted with most professors in thismajor. They are all very intelligent people and for the most part, great teachers. However, I wishthat I would have met more professors that support diversity earlier in my career here. Thoughit’s

trainingSome educators may argue that the existing computer science ethics education does not impactstudent views on algorithm bias and their professional knowledge. Indeed, taking one or possiblytwo engineering ethics courses as part of a degree program may not have a lasting impact onstudents embarking on professional careers. However, alternatives to semester-long ethicscourses may be more effective and impactful. In a systematic literature review on engineeringethics education, Hess13 (2018) suggests integrating micro-insertions of ethical decision-makingacross the curriculum. For example, the micro-insertion of asking students to choose betweentwo refrigerants by weighing not only environmental impacts but also adding costconsiderations14

program at Boys Republic. To date, manyengineering students have received engineering career opportunities as a direct result of theirwork on Ponderosa.I. IntroductionRobotics and automation systems are now a standard method of manufacturing across manyindustries. The design of these systems requires careful consideration and thought for theintegration of design topics including engineering disciplines of mechanical design, electricaldesign, software engineering, and controls engineering1. Within these disciplines, furtherdiscipline decomposition such as machine design, fluid dynamics, analog and digital electronics, computer vision, and real-time software are further required2. Designers of such systems mustbe able to understand the

InvolvementBecause this work is done at a primarily undergraduate institution, there are many challenges indeveloping a long term robotics project such as this one. It is difficult to maintain continuity in ahardware/software development environment when students are only able to actively contributefor 3-6 months at a time during their college careers. It is a challenging balance to find the rightcombination of student and faculty involvement on a long term project. If students retain mostof the technical knowledge during initial development, then when they graduate, a significantportion of the system knowledge is lost, leaving new students with the tasks of figuring out howthe system was organized. On the other hand, if faculty members are overly involved

fields of practice, includinga full tenured biomedical engineering professor with a joint appointment in chemical andbiomolecular engineering, an assistant professor of teaching in biomedical engineering, and alecturer in materials science. The full professor is a serial entrepreneur, with over sixcompanies, while the assistant teaching professor is an expert in engineering design andeducation, and the lecturer is a professional working in industry. These broad skills andexpertise have allowed the professors to provide insights into entrepreneurship, academia, andindustry, which highlight the various potential career opportunities the engineering studentswill engage in upon graduation.Table 2: Course learning outcomes and corresponding ABET

, maybe having a positively impactful interaction with a teacher or professor early on ina student’s career in STEM leads to a strengthened engineering identity that, in turn, providesincreased resilience and, hence, potential to overcome academic obstacles. We hope that theresults of our continued efforts in this study will contribute effectively to the growing body ofliterature on valuable insights that inform best practices in the development, implementation, andassessment of educational interventions that support students with diverse identities to persist inengineering.Bibliography [1] President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) (2012).
