too nice because of the extra attentionthey might garner), and some event they want to host or some action they want to take. Duringmidterms the Project held a de-stress party where they played a video and provided snacks.People sat around and talked and met new people. We’ve also held a transfer student welcomeparty, planned a transfer student app to help them when they are still learning the ropes, held aComing Out Day cake party (that most of the freshman EE class attended), and had a lobbydecoration party before the Winter holiday (where students drew pictures or wrote a greeting andposted them in our main lobby of how they celebrated the holidays).Along with planning parties, the project planned services and actions. One of our main

Industry Engagement versus Faculty Mentorship in Engineering Senior Capstone Design CoursesAbstract:The senior design capstone course is an important experience for engineering undergraduatestudents. This course prepares students for industry by having students solve open-ended real-world problems. During the course, a student team defines a problem, plans an approach, develops a solution, and validates their solution, which culminates in oral and writtendissemination. Typically, undergraduate programs have provided students with facultymentors to develop a solution for a specific project. In order for projects and teams to besuccessful, the mentors must provide invaluable support, collaboration, and interest in

(is that bad)? Are these categories, steps, or orientations(I currently use all of these labels interchangeably)? Do I have the necessary disciplinarybackground to develop this (who should help me)? How does this relate to engineering andengineering education? This paper is a work in progress, and I plan to have open discussion inthe presentation sessions.IntroductionSo many of us are working in the area of diversity, especially over the last several years. Myacademic home, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), is at apredominately white state university. The caring and “woke” individuals at the university arespending increasingly more time and resources on initiatives that will make the university morewelcoming

could connect to students’ prior knowledge andcontextualize the importance of professional ethics. The interactions have the potential to engagecritical thinking, highlight multiple perspectives, all to improve instruction and student learningin ethics education. In other words, given that students’ mental models are different from expertinstructors, the survey findings may help instructors become more effective or aware as theyincorporate micro-lessons, modules, or problem-based learning in their curriculum. What else might engineering and computer science faculty and librarians do? Asking questionsabout student experiences could help educators gauge how to frame a lesson plan and clarifylearning objectives. From there, relevant learning

available/unavailable to students. The campus is talking aboutincreasing the number of new students and the students were quite upset. They were upsetbecause the resources at present weren’t enough and the messaging had told them that withouttaking care of the students that are here, they plan on bringing in more students. They took this asa disrespect for the students that were here and that the school should be committed to giving anystudent that comes to Cal Poly all the support they need to succeed. The students felt that mentalhealth services was a key component to taking care of students. For the students, this, again, translated to the school not supporting a minority group of students, specifically, those that needhelp with mental health

dean of engineering and thedepartment chairs of computer engineering and computer science. These visits consisted ofdiscussing Herbie’s presence and influence on campus as well as plans for the future. We tookpictures of Herbie with the campus administrators, which ended up on the university’s majorwebsites, giving Herbie significant exposure to the university community and expandingHerbie’s social network. As Herbie’s recognition progressed, we began to do “Herbie Giveaways.” These giveawaysbegan by having a basket full of candy attached to Herbie’s head and running Herbie around thehallways of campus. Students would recognize Herbie, take a piece of candy, and sometimestake pictures or videos of him. When the social media account first

more than their fair share of time and words in most deliberations. Some research has explored the relationships between gender composition and teamperformance. Woolley, Chabris, Pentland, Hashmi, & Malone (2010) investigated the linkbetween collective intelligence factor of a group and their corresponding performance on variousteamwork tasks (e.g., brainstorming, planning events). They showed how collective intelligencewas more a function of social sensitivity of the members than the sum of individual intelligenceof each member. Notably, these factors were positively correlated with female participation andnegatively correlated with the number of speaking turns took during execution of tasks. Thesefindings emphasize that power dynamics and

” perspective of our persisting students.18 In addition, we see growth mindsetrepresented in the way that the students appear to be ready and willing to adapt and improve, as afixed mindset, on the other hand, would be in direct contradiction to these efforts.195. Future workIn an effort to address our driving research questions, the next steps of our ongoing work in thisstudy will be focused on completing the final coding of all 23 transcripts. As a component of ourprocess in developing conclusions via a grounded theory approach, we will report on the relativeprevalence of any coding strings from our master codebook. In addition, we also plan to searchfor patterns that may point to potential causal links between occurrences. As a hypotheticalexample
