, research-intensive publicuniversity in the Mid-Atlantic with roughly 22,000 students.ParticipantsTo answer research question 1, the long-term effects of the mastery grading system, we analyzedthe performance of the Fall 2023 students across five Calculus I sections taught by three differentinstructors. Among these, three were taught using the mastery grading approach, while theremaining two were taught using a traditional grading scheme. The same cohort of students progressed to Calculus II in Spring 2024 and Calculus III in Fall2024, with the following completion numbers: • Fall 2023 (Calculus I): 157 students, with 55 enrolled in traditionally graded sections and 102 enrolled in mastery graded sections. • Spring 2024 (Calculus II

? 3. How do students perceive the intervention? Do these perceptions differ based on factors such as sociodemographic, precalculus experience and calculus experience? This research project is supported by HHMI Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) Learning Community atthe University of Virginia.ContextThis IRB approved study occurred at the University of Virginia, a large, research-intensive, public, predominately white institution (PWI) in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. At our institution, students apply to and are accepted directly into the School of Engineering & Applied Science. Allengineering students are required to have credits for Single Variable Calculus II and MultivariableCalculus as part of the engineering

changes and improvements of ODE courses andother IBL relevant courses, ultimately enhancing support for our students. ContextThis IRB-approved research was conducted at a prominent, research-focused public university inthe Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, primarily attended by white students. Within ouruniversity, the Center for Applied Mathematics (APMA) in the School of Engineering & AppliedScience (SEAS) comprises a dedicated team of educators. They offer a range of math courses toboth undergraduate and graduate students from SEAS, and they engage in research aimed atimproving teaching methods and revising course curricula to better address students' needs.APMA 2130 - Ordinary

education. For example, Alpers et al. adapted this framework tosuggest guidelines for developing mathematical curricula in different engineering programs [12].Tague et al. used this framework to study faculty perceptions engineering students’ mathreadiness. Faulkner and colleagues explored faculty perceptions on what constitutesmathematical maturity for engineering students [5], [6].3. Methods3.1 Research sitesThis study is being conducted at two universities: one private R2 and one public M1 university(based on Carnegie Classification), both located in the mid-Atlantic region of the USA. Theprivate R2 university (referred to as “Large Private University” in the paper) offers, throughdifferent colleges, undergraduate degrees in both engineering and

an online format, and many‬ ‭students struggled in this environment. Mathematics was one of the subjects most affected by‬ ‭online learning. At a large R1 university in the mid-Atlantic region, more engineering students‬ ‭than ever before entered their first year, placing in Pre-Calculus instead of Calculus 1, and were‬ ‭classified as pre-math-ready. Being ‘math ready’ and placing into Calculus 1 is critical for‬ ‭engineering students due to the engineering curriculum's reliance on mathematics and the‬ ‭barriers related to the subject. This study shares the experiences of 15 first-year engineering‬ ‭students who were behind in math during the 2022-2023 academic year. Most participants were‬ ‭in their
