Students often strugglewith identifying and learning these facts, terms, and principles. This paper reports on a projectthat evaluated the use of electronic flashcards in two undergraduate engineering classes. Thestudy materials

achievement tests determine whether a student is ready to move on to thenext worksheet level. Bandura15 would describe this as the “self-regulated learner.” Students are guided through the assignments, and are asked to repeat the worksheetswhere they experienced difficulty or made a number of mistakes. This activity providesthe students with what Ericsson, et al.9 calls “deliberate practice.” In effect, practicereinforces learning and provides the student with opportunities to re-learn steps he or shemay have forgotten. Research supports evidence that basic math skills mastered duringelementary grades strengthen the probability of success in the upper level mathematics.10Teacher-centered methods such as Kumon are used as an aspect of

Where Does ASCE Stand? In October 2002, the Body of Knowledge Curricula Committee of ASCE released a report with asection on what should be taught and learned. The committee concluded that the 21st centurycivil engineer must demonstrate:1. Ability to apply the common technical core of mathematical, scientific, and engineering knowledge underlying the role of the civil engineer as the master integrator.2. Ability to apply knowledge in a specialized technical and/or professional area.3. Ability to

The value of exams as a learning tool has always beenquestioned. Some courses use papers or projects as the basis for evaluation instead. These methods possess the advantage of directing the attention of students to their writing buthave the disadvantage of providing the instructor with no opportunity to evaluate how well thestudents mastered the basic ideas and skills being taught. (2)In lecture based courses it is even more difficult to replace exams with other means of evaluationespecially when the course is problem solving in nature. Therefore exams

Results of their data analysis indicated that the presence of role models andstudents’ perceptions of their chance of success and level of knowledge about several aspects ofgraduate school contributed to the decision to enroll. They further developed a Social CognitiveCareer Theory (SCCT) framework focusing on student self efficacy, and how they perceivedgraduate school’s alignment to their interests and future goals.Other studies16, 8, 20 reported in recent years have advocated the attainment of a masters degreeprogram

majority of engineering studentsclassify themselves as inductive learners rather than deductive learners. Induction is our naturallearning style whereby we observe the world and draw inferences. It is thus preferable to engagestudents in active learning during lecture. Active learning is an approach where students areactive participants in mastering knowledge. One approach to fostering active learning is toprovide opportunities for students to apply a concept to solve a problem. To promote this engagement, a student response system was employed. The institutionhad an existing electronic classroom response system available called Iclickers. The Iclickerprogram requires students to purchase a response device that communicates with a receiver

The various positions of civil engineers as professionals were encapsulated in theVision, such as serving as master constructor and as a steward of the natural environment. The initial BOK created by the ASCE was considered a work in progress and, in tandem with theVision, formed the foundation for the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century,Preparing the Civil Engineer for the Future, Second Edition3 (BOK2). The signatureaccomplishment of the BOK2 is the articulation of the twenty-four outcomes necessary forfulfilling the body of knowledge; i.e., the skills a person must master to become a professionalcivil engineer. major – and perhaps the most significant – benefit of the ConE program described hereis the enhancement of serious construction research. The SAEC will offer masters anddoctoral programs in construction starting about a year after the bachelors programbegins. The possibility of this research has attracted new faculty members to the SAEC atboth newly awarded and seasoned Ph.D. levels. The SAEC has just hired a new facultymember for this purpose and expects to hire two to four more in the next several years. These new faculty members will strengthen an already strong faculty of constructionpractitioners.Bibliography1. They get to experiencefirst-hand a state-of-the-art fabrication technology that may be valuable in their professionalcareers. Working in teams is an important aspect of the course, while the individual project seeksto ensure that each individual student masters basic CAD modeling. been called the European Higher Education Area. Its goal is to coordinate the diversehigher education systems that function in the different member countries so that they work insync while respecting the cultural diversity and autonomy of each university. This modelfavours not only a common credit system that allows an easy homologation that promotesmobility amongst undergraduate and graduate students, but the proposed system convergestowards the Anglo-Saxon model, where the titles are denominated Bachelor, Master, andDoctoral degree.Due to its possibly global impact, the convenience of adopting a similar model for the training ofengineers in Latin America has been greatly debated. In the continent in general and Colombiain particular we also
