of the unique courses in the program. Many of the local employers are in the aerospace industry so the new program will be taughtfrom an aerospace context. This paper will discuss the unique partnership between industry andacademia to help establish a brand-new industry-focused engineering program.IntroductionMany have called for reforms in engineering education. Rugarcia et al. (2000) argue thatengineering education instructional methods have changed very little in decades despite researchthat recommends more effective methods [1]. Tryggvason and Apelian (2006) write, “we need toexamine the (engineering) curriculum from a new perspective and accept the possibility thatchanges that go beyond minor tweaking are needed” [2]. this study and the number ofparticipants interviewed for this study. All of the participants had experience working in the DIBsector in areas that work with microelectronics engineering and they were involved in the hiringof entry-level employees and interns. Each participant represented a different area of themicroelectronics engineering development process and was able to inform the larger studyregarding different technical and professional skill needs. Table 1 documents the pseudonymsand the areas in which the participants had experience. Participants were from a variety ofsectors within the DIB, including government agencies, a government contractor, privateindustry (i.e., aerospace and engineering technology solutions), and government

interest in participating in a project to re-energize theiradvisory board toward our future program development. This paper outlines the results from thissurvey.Research ApproachIn order to replicate and update the work of Genheimer and Shelab, we chose to use a simplifiedquestionnaire-based survey (which we termed a “lightening poll”) with Likert scale stylequestions targeted at a convenience sample of deans and chairs of engineering programs basedupon our professional associations and mailing lists. These included a list of contacts for civil, environmental, mechanical, aeronautical, aerospace, materials, and related engineering programsin the United States. The survey was designed for several purposes: 1. Serve as a first marketing for the

from over 75 interns from across the JHU/APL,16 day-of volunteers/mentors, and 8 judges (a total of approximately 25 JHU/APL staff members). There was a diverse representation of race and ethnicity, with the majority of students identifyingas Asian and Black or African American. This reflected the high participation of students from theCIRCUIT and ATLAS internship programs. Survey responding students identified as 56% male,40% female, and 4% other/prefer not to say. Academic disciplines represented by students werediverse, unlike traditional hackathons which often see participation primarily from software-oriented majors. explore the motivation mechanism and interaction channels underpinning educationalcollaboration practices in UIC as parts of long-lasing engineering education reform at BUAA.The analyzed samples in this paper carried out at BUAA are in the broad field of engineeringeducation covering not only traditional engineering programs such as aerospace engineeringand software engineering but also interdisciplinary engineering programs including artificialintelligence in the years 2021-2022. That is, we focus on educational involvement in university-industry relations at BUAA rather than focusing on specific engineering programs to explorethe motivation mechanism and interaction channels.2.2 Research designA qualitative research design was introduced in
