number of certificated helicopter pilots in 2022 was27,500 which is nearly 4,000 less than a decade ago. [1] Traditionally, the U.S. military has beenthe main source of experienced pilots for the general aviation helicopter industry. Additionally, anationwide shortage of airline pilots has caused the major airlines to greatly widen their recruitingpractices. [2] This combined with the retirement of Vietnam-era helicopter pilots has led to ashortage of experienced pilots in many areas of the rotary-wing industry. None of these shortageshas a more profound impact on the general public than the helicopter air ambulance industry(Medevac). [3] [4] [5] [6] It is in response to this shortage that the University (APSU) created the Aviation

Methodology To compare digital badging to other methods of recording skills and competencies, researchers design a digital badging system

make military engineers at all ranks valuable candidates for humanitarian, peace, ordevelopment focused engineering programs.IntroductionCombat is not the only form of military engagement. In 2022, the Congressional ResearchService reported 471 deployments since 1798 with 11 formal declarations of war [1]. These factsconfirm that 98% of U.S military engagements are for operations other than war. The 460 otherengagements involved engaging military partners and allies through military training, peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and disaster management or response. Theseexperiences give military engineers insight to the challenges that global communities face andthat are addressed through some type of construction project in a community. Some

the US STEM workforce, if implemented [15].Successive reports in 2022 and 2024 [16] - [17] to US Congress call for VA-allocated support forVeterans pursuing STEM degrees, recommending that the VA and other support agencies step inwhere access gaps in Higher Education have persisted, and increase the proportion of Veteransseeking STEM degrees. Of note, only 15% of Veterans tracked in the 2018-2022 cohort appliedtheir G.I. Bill support to obtaining Engineering degrees, as shown in Figure 1. Figure 1. G.A.O. Report on Veteran in STEM [17]While these efforts are laudable, more inquiry can be dedicated to mapping the terrain of STEMhigher education, that is, the culture and climate that is reinforced by faculty, staff, and

The partnering universities REU offices provided experiences for an additionalsix veterans at their home universities. In 2022, one veteran student from each university participated in the exchange program and one additional student conducted a home university research experience. Other results and statements. Overall, the students had a positive learning experience throughout the program and built new mentorship networks. 100% of the participants stated that they would recommend SERVE to other veterans and seven of nine traveling students indicated that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the overall

Gagn´e Award for Graduate Student Research in Instructional Design for her Ph.D. dissertation at UNT. Currently, she is working on a multi-year NSF grant researching Peer-Led Team Learning in asynchronous online engineering courses for non-traditional military and Veteran college students. Her contributions to this grant include logistical setup for the control and experimental courses, recruiting research participants, conducting interviews, along with collecting, coding, and analyzing the qualitative data from both the student and Peer Leader participants in this unique learning environment

Brookings Institute [16]. Veteran job experience is remarkablytransferrable with members displaying knowledge of key vocational tasks, time management, and team coordination more so than non-veteran peers of the same age. Additionally, veteransare found to maintain equal or better work productivity than non-veteran peers [17]. Similarly, this task execution style is not at all passive, and instead, veteran task-completion is supported bypersonal initiative, aligned with a supervisor’s intent and stated directives [17].MethodsDuring fall semester 2022, 139 students participated in a survey of positive and negative beliefsconcerning veterans and military service. These participants included a mix of veteran and non-veteran students, including 9 active

, the author divided the reviewed papers into threecategories: “veterans as college students,” “veterans experiences in STEM,” and “academiclibraries and veterans.” By using these topics, a narrative of what student veterans expect fromtheir libraries and how those expectations can be met shall be created and understood.LIMITATIONSOne limitation of this review is that neither data mining nor a machine learning process was usedduring the search. This may have increased the number of articles found, though it may have alsoreturned more false positives. The reason for ignoring these tools was because the author is stilllearning how to utilize them for research. The review only included publications up to the summer of 2022. It is possible that

. Thisinaugural ASEE panel centered on challenges of and potential initiatives to support studentveterans in STEM. Outcomes from the panel discussion were subsequently reported in a paperpresented at the 2018 ASEE Annual Conference in Columbus, OH [14].In 2022, the MVD leadership team planned, coordinated, and conducted a follow-on panel, comprised of veteran engineering education stakeholders and addressing the broad theme ofveteran pathways to engineering careers. Presented at the 2023 ASEE Annual Conference, thepurpose of the stakeholder panel, “Veteran Pathways to Engineering,” was multifold: to examineveterans’ engineering career pathways from viewpoints that may not be as well represented inthe literature (i.e., veteran and current enlisted

members that wasinitiated in 2022. Specifically, the paper focuses on analyzing the faculty and staff perceptions asa function of both the number of proximal connections to family and friends who are veteransand the presumed closeness of those connections. Proximity was categorized as: self as veteran;spouse as veteran; grandparent; parent; adult child; sibling; extended relative; friend; former orcurrent student; and no veteran connection. Preliminary results suggest that having manyconnections to veteran populations is more impactful on one’s opinion and beliefs aboutstereotypes than having a more direct familial tie. Through this work, a deeper understanding ofthat impact has been developed as it relates to many common stereotypes of students

minimum, the decision on how to rank Cadets ultimately rests in the Professor of Military Science (PMS) and the MSIII (Military Science III) instructor at the host campus. The PMS is the highest- ranking military person on university staff and the MSIII instructor is the teacher and coach[2]Johnny K. Davis, MG, personal communication, March 10, 2022. for all junior Cadets. For both on-campus evaluations and CST ranking, Cadets are ranked on a five-tier scale as described below: “O” (Outstanding) – Top 15% of cohort “E” (Excellent) – 15%-50% of cohort “P” (Proficient) – 50%-85% of cohort “C” (Capable) – 85%-100% of cohort “U” (Unsatisfactory) – Cadet did not meet the requirements 2.3
