Paper ID #39662Understanding the Male Student Perception of Culture Climate for Womenin Engineering EducationMs. Alexis Nicole Barney, Iowa State University I am an undergraduate student at Iowa State University, studying Math Secondary Education. I began my studies as an aerospace engineering student and quickly noticed a chilly culture climate for women studying engineering. I decided to conduct research on the topic to see how the dominant group (white- male students) views these issues and what are they doing to solve them. Furthermore, I explored what could be done to improve the culture climate for minoritized groups

engineering can be identified as hard-applied-life. Additionally, themanagerial-based disciplines of industrial/manufacturing/systems engineering can be identifiedas soft-applied-life. While all engineering disciplines require rigorous education, these analysisadjectives tend to be unfairly simplified and colloquially the more social, science-based “lifesystem” disciplines are described as “soft” and the more computational, math-based “nonlifesystem” disciplines as “hard” [17]. Thus, we wanted to understand the anecdotal musings thatwomen are avoiding the “hard” engineering disciplines, like aerospace or electrical engineering, for “soft” engineering disciplines, like chemical engineering or engineering management [18],[19]. Additionally, we

Paper ID #41460Promoting Diversity in Welding Engineering Technology through the Mediumof ArtDr. Mary Foss, Weber State University Dr. Mary Foss is an Associate Professor in the Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering. With a background in industry, she saw a disconnect between classroom learning and the real-world experience she needed once joining the workforce in the Aerospace Engineering industry. As a result of her industry experience she incorporates project-based learning throughout her curriculum and service and scholarship interests as a means of developing skills in problem solving, engagement, and

relatable inspirational videos, so more female engineers in Vermontwere asked to create a “if you can see it, you can become it” video series. Mentor feedbackindicated that it was challenging for them to have meaningful conversations about equity, diversity, and inclusion with the youth, so Vermont Afterschool arranged for guest speakers todiscuss the challenges they have encountered in the STEM field. Some guest speakers havestayed to do the engineering activity, allowing the Mentors to see an example of a femaleengineer in practice. Youth also went on a field trip at the end of last semester to BetaTechnologies, an aerospace company in Burlington, Vermont where the youth and Mentorsexperienced real life engineering. Over several sessions, Vermont
