in the fall of 2022, the inauguralcohort comprised eight students, including new first time (NFT) students and transfer students. The following year saw the addition of a second group of 15 students, increasing the totalnumber of students enrolled into the program to 23. Beyond offering financial aid, ASESsupports its participants with academic resources, such as a credit-bearing course on engineeringleadership and career development, and access to faculty and peer mentorship in a mentorshipprogram. Throughout its first three semesters, spanning from Fall 2022 to Fall 2023, the programsuccessfully retained a significant number of its students. The literature suggests that bolstering student support systems and fostering faculty

The social engagement activities arestructured to support students from all backgrounds, prior knowledge levels, and interest areas.Prior work details the social engagement activity development process and summarizes theoverall design, participation, perceived participant engagement level, successes, and challengesof the activities [27]. Scholars Program with anoriginal focus on civil engineering had become very popular, and as a result of applicant demand, has now been expanded to include applicants from all other undergraduate engineering programs. Background LiteratureCompleting a four-year degree in STEM fields is not an easy task, and the task is significantlymore difficult for students graduating from high schools with high percentages of low-incomestudents. To get a sense of the difficulties students from low-income schools must face, considerthe statistics that were reported in the tenth annual High School Benchmark Report (NSCRC,2022), a report that includes over one million high school graduates per year from public andprivate high schools. Sixty-five percent of students

Our research experience for the undergraduate(REU) program focuses on engineering educational research, which is to expose and trainundergraduate students in emerging engineering education research through independent, collaborative well-managed, high-quality research projects. This paper shares the findings of the REU participants’ perception of engineering educationresearch before and after participating in Engineering Education (EED) research projects. Thequalitative data were collected through Qualtrics survey from three REU cohorts, those whoparticipated in the summer of 2021, 2022, and 2023. Figure 4: Response to survey Question 7 versus Final Exam Problem Grade In addition to the survey, the grades from the Markov chain question on the 2023 finalexam were compared to those on the almost-identical problem given in 2022. (See Appendix forquestion details.) Out of 15 possible points, the students in 2022 averaged 9.68 points with astandard deviation of 4.36. In 2023, the students averaged 10.46 points with a standard deviationof 3.69. Though the difference in grades between the two years does not rise to the level ofstatistical significance (𝑝 = 0.14), it is hoped that with more administrations of the course in thefuture, and therefore more data, a significant difference will be seen.Future Changes Overall, the

This confirmation of the problem’s existence across different corecourses was a clear indication that the issue was systemic and not confined to a single course. Figure 2: Survey results: RBE 2002 (left) and RBE 3002 (right) for all students in Spring 2022.These revelations presented a red flag for the RBE curriculum, underscoring a critical gap in theprogramming preparedness of students. Such a gap poses significant challenges, not only for thestudents struggling to meet the course demands but also for the overall effectiveness of the RBEprogram. It became evident that addressing

universities are playing catchup since the AI tools are new and AI hasexperienced rapid adoption by students [2]. The most widely used AI tool is ChatGPT, which wasreleased in November 2022 [3]. Engineering faculty organized national conference panel discussionsto help their communities understand the impacts of ChatGPT [1]. Concerns about ScholasticDishonesty (SD) as well as optimism about the possibilities of increased student learning are beingdiscussed [4]. SD concerns are widely anticipated where AI tools can write sections of reports so thattraditional plagiarism detectors will not flag the work [5]. The potential negative impact of AI-assistedwriting is more widely recognized than the potential positive impacts. Positive impacts are

program is the historic lack of community-engagement skills in engineering curricula. Thus, many of the faculty and staff within the HE advisory committee (though not all) haveacademic backgrounds in engineering but are not formally educated in community development. Therefore, much of their perspective on the desired learning outcomes is informed by personalexperience in the HE space, rather than an understanding of the literature and best practices. Toovercome this limitation, several steps were taken throughout the 2017-2022 timeframe. On the other hand, North Carolina A&T provided only the numbers of Blackengineering transfers overall on their websites, but did not disaggregate these numbers by sendinginstitution type. In this case, we note that the number of Black engineering transfers fromcommunity colleges was unavailable (U/A). Another inconsistency is the specific years for whichtransfer data is reported by each university. Thepreliminary results from the first year of implementation (2022-2023 academic year) suggest thatsimilar to the original study, there is an increase across some of the student constructs, includingstudent engagement. This finding was also supported by engineering teachers’ input aboutstudent engagement in the classroom.
