. Educational materials that introduce students to concepts of energy generation and usageare important. The National Science Board has recently called the transformation of the U.S.fossil fuel-based energy economy to a sustainable energy economy a critical grand challengefacing the country (NSB, 2009). Furthermore, the US Department of Energy has called forreplacing 30% of the nation’s fossil-based fuels by 2030 (U.S. DOE 2008). Additionally, theEnergy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007) (Public Law, 2007) mandates theproduction of 36 billion gallons per year of biofuels by 2022, of which 21 billion must come Page 25.180.2from feedstock

engineers in practice would have become certified as EI’s, and thefirst batch of EI’s would have enough credits to satisfy the proposed BS+30 requirement forlicensure as PE’s. The current target for implementation of the NCEES Model Law is 2020. Ifthis proposal were adopted this year, then by 2022 implementation of the Raise the Bar initiativewould be painless, since virtually every practicing engineer would have the equivalent of the 30extra credit hours and the industry experience needed to obtain a PE license. In addition, thebulk of the practicing engineers would have at least one professional certification and thedreaded industry exemption to fade away naturally over the course of about 30 years as EI’s whoare already non-exempt become
