implemented Virtual Labs (VLs) for AAE 20401, AeromechanicsII, a one-credit lab course for second-year aerospace engineering students, in Fall 2018–Spring2019. Following the AAE 20401 VLs, we also implanted VLs for AAE 35201, StructuralAnalysis I, a one-credit lab course for third-year aerospace engineering students, in Spring 2019–Spring 2020. The implementation of the VLs coincided with a particular period of time: theCOVID-19 school closure and remote learning in March 2020-August 2020. Thus, this papertalks about the following two main topics: 1) the implementation of AAE 35201 VLs and 2)pedagogy change before, during, and after the COVID-19 school closure and learning. Then, asa part of the discussion, we will talk about how the COVID-19 school

Flipped-Style Classroom Instruction for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Students Abstract During the Spring 2020 semester at Old Dominion University (ODU), a completely onlinemode of instruction was adopted to arrest the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. As a consequence, each unit within the university was practically required to make its ownarrangement to ensure the students and faculty were well equipped to smoothly transition to thenew mode of instruction and at the same time, ensure student success in the program. TheDepartment of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at ODU responded with aneffective strategy to equip its faculty with a cost

and figure 2), including the percentage of womengraduates (figure 3), there is a shortage of engineering graduates required only in certainindustries where foreign nationals cannot be hired and require a security clearance [3]. Onesuch industry facing imminent shortage of graduates in its workforce is aerospaceengineering (AE).The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics (2019) estimates the employment growth of AE at 7% for the next decade which is at par with other occupations. The growth in the sector isprimarily based on high-end technology jobs such as computational fluid dynamics testingand redesigning aircrafts for better efficiency. Predicting employment growth tends to beconservative. For example, the predicted employment numbers in AE

simulate the motion of aircraft based on control inputs initiated by the user.1 However, when testing the motors used to drive the motion, they proved to not be powerful enough toexecute all necessary functions without sustaining damage. At the end of the school year, theteam determined that more powerful motors would be necessary. More funding was requestedand eventually granted, but not before the senior students had graduated from ORU. The nextyear’s class of students installed the new motors in the Spring of 2019, but testing the prototypewas very limited due to the School of Engineering moving all labs and classrooms to newfacilities across the street. Boxing up the simulator and all required equipment proved to be alarge challenge. Another
