response. They also complete a truss building exercise. The second lab option offered through aninterdisciplinary pairing with architecture is a tour of a space habitat that was developed as aprototype for The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). And, the thirdoffering highlights the lighting portion of architectural engineering with a tour and demonstrationof the lighting dome – counting natural lumens.Although participation in NLD is positive outreach for the STEM community, it has yet toproduce a student at the school of architecture. However, the numbers are small and it is onlyoffered for a few hours, once a year. places an emphasis on the schemata of the learners. The mental framework of thearchitectural education experience supersedes the prerequisite knowledge. The architecturestudents learn and retrieve information differently while possessing the same prerequisiteknowledge as the engineering students because of the disparities in their mental frameworks.Structures education is commonly a linear progression from mathematics, physics, rigid bodystatics, mechanics of deformable bodies, structural materials design and analysis, to lateral forcesand overall building behavior.[7] The gradual accrual of prerequisite knowledge is suited for theengineering schemata rather than the architecture schemata. A need exists to develop new way ofthinking about this

is no equivalent committee to provide the AE perspective for educational activities. The AE programs would benefit greatly by uniting and lobbying for greater participation and input into the various ASCE educational activities.• The civil engineers are leading ground-breaking initiatives that will ultimately affect AE programs. ASCE Policy 465, which makes the masters degree the first professional degree in civil engineering19, is making great strides toward completion. The National Council of Examiners in Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) recently voted to amend the model law to require thirty hours of coursework above the bachelor degree for professional licensure20. Graduates of AE programs will inevitably be

organizations were already conducting longitudinal studies to measure their progress in these areas, we would have no reason to worry. We know, however, that’s rarely the case. A 1980 study by the ACSA, Tracking Study of Architecture Graduates, revealed almost identical concerns, as did the 1996 Building Community report as well as others before and after. None of these studies concluded that education is hopelessly flawed, but instead, that there is ample room for improvement on all fronts—if we do, in fact, agree that these are crucial skill sets needed to operate in the design and construction industries.”2Previous studies by one of our authors have found that architecture students value technicalcompetency
