Interestingly, although enhanced fabrication skills was a key learningobjective, no students indicated that this was a primary reason to enroll in the course, nor didthey view fabrication skills as directly benefitting them in either college coursework or in theengineering profession. Although they believed the construction experience might help with asenior capstone project, they saw fabrication as disparate from engineering practice, which theyviewed as heavily focused on theory and application. As a part of thecurriculum, students participate in a three semester capstone sequence that consists of a projectbased junior design course, followed by a yearlong industry sponsored design experience.Originally, the program proposed a capstone model of incorporating Junior students into onesemester of the senior capstone course, but quickly determined students (Juniors and Seniorsalike) were not well prepared to interact with industry clients (whom are financial sponsors andact as clients for each project). Since 2015 she has been actively involved in the University of Miami College of Engineering’s ”Redefining Engineering Education” strategic plan on educational innovation. As part of this plan, Dr. Basalo worked with 2 other faculty members to organize inaugural Senior Design Expo in May 2017, an exposition where over 200 senior students showcased their Capstone projects to the University of Miami community, alumni and industry leaders. Starting in 2016 and through her work with the University of Miami’s Engaged Faculty Fellowship program, Dr. Basalo incorporated an academic service component into the final project for a sophomore-level Measurements Lab

projects into two design courses at Mines and assessthe ways in which HCD protocols, which included significant stakeholder engagementcomponents, impacted students’ understandings of sustainable development and their perceptionsof their roles in sustainable development initiatives. One of the selected courses was, Projects forPeople, and the other was the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) SeniorDesign Capstone course. The courses were chosen because of their focus on applying HCDprotocols, as well as the instructors’ willingness to participate in the project. is adjunct faculty at Brigham Young University in the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology. She is a Coordinator for Women in Engineering and Technology (WE@BYU), teaches and advises numerous Mechanical Engineering Capstone senior design teams, teaches Global Engineering Outreach with study abroad to Peru, and researches with the Compliant Mechanisms Research Group. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from BYU and also worked at Ford Motor Company as a manufacturing and design engineer in Automatic Transmission Operations. Terri received the Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award from Brigham Young University in 2016. She is the mother of four children and is married
