Some students were part oflarge, established experimental laboratories while other students worked individually or in smallgroups on computational or theoretical projects. As this course was launched in Fall 2020,students in this class experienced the additional challenge of starting college (and undergraduateresearch) remotely during a global pandemic. The design and content of this course wereevaluated using anonymous feedback and a review of reflective discussion posts in order todetermine whether the course supported the stated learning goals. This project aimed at utilizing an Internet of Things (IoT)- based platform to measure these quantities remotely. In this system, oil temperature, oil level and oil permittivity are measured with custom transducers. This information is then collected and sent to a remote server that can be accessed from any computer or smart phone. This real-time information could reveal problems within a transformer or elsewhere in the power system, creating a more precise way to dispatch system maintenance. SE

students applied had an August 17 start date. A fifth project started in late Augustwith a national laboratory. This student was funded from a current grant active at the university.The selected student was an international graduate student who was overseas at the time, and thedelayed start was due to the processing time for CPT, security, and grant paperwork. This studentcould begin the internship overseas and complete it after returning to Oregon State University forthe Fall term. The last two projects involved direct hiring by the employer partner and did notutilize the technology platform due to company security concerns. These began in late Augustand ended in early October.
