on mutual goals, professors control what happens in the classroom andwhat materials are covered; they devise tests and assignments, set the schedule, organize studentteams, and are the sole arbiters of performance. The relationship generally is governed by the“contract” of the syllabus, which states the policies, content, and schedule of the course. Thestudent typically has very little ability to influence anything related to a course. The mutual goalof “learning” is not necessarily tightly coupled to mutual outcomes. At the end of the class, theprofessor moves on to the next semester regardless of whether any individual student has learnedthe material. The student, however, bears any negative consequences of a bad grade.Conversely, in a

impact on the world.Students track their effort and learning via tokens in an online learning management system(LMS). More importantly, it provides them the opportunity to fail, and learn from their failures.A major problem with the traditional class structure of today is that it relies heavily on thepass/fail aspect of the course, putting pressure on undergraduate students. Most students have not been previously exposed to the material before coming into aclass, yet their final grade suffers if they make a mistake on assignments or tests. Whether theylearned from their mistake or not is irrelevant because their grades have suffered irreversibly. With IBL's structure, students can make mistakes as they learn while still being able to

project-basedlearning (PBL) and hands-on exploration have on student learning across a variety of disciplinesincluding engineering. Recently, the Mechanical Engineering Department at The University ofIowa introduced undergraduate and graduate certificate programs in artificial intelligence, modeling, and simulations (AIMS) that aim to teach students: (1) the importance of uncertaintyquantification, (2) the various types of combinations (e.g., modeling and simulation-assistedmachine learning) and hybrid approaches, and (3) using hybrid models toward the design ofintelligent complex machines. This work-in-progress seeks to understand how extra/co-curricularactivities, as an extension of semester course content, can benefit student learning outcomes
