importantly, the aim of the course is for students togain an understanding of how their actions and designs have a significant impact on globalsustainability efforts.Incorporating sustainability into product and process design as a design constraint is clearly anecessity as all designers must understand the limits on natural resources. As environmentalconcerns such as global warming and energy security continue to weigh on society, the nextgeneration of students will need to be prepared to solve complex sustainability challenges. DfE isone element of moving towards sustainable development, and is a concept that has developedand evolved since the early 1990’s, largely initiated by the electronics industry. In general, DfEis a “specific set of design

Criterion 5 states that “[s]tudents must be prepared for engineering practice througha curriculum culminating in a major design experience based on the knowledge and skillsacquired in earlier course work and incorporating appropriate engineering standards and multiplerealistic constraints.” However, the definition of what constitutes an “appropriate engineeringstandard” has been subjected to various interpretations, both wide and narrow. Arguments havebeen made that all capstone design projects must include engineering standards from theappropriate professional society: IEEE Standards for electrical and computer engineers, ASMEStandards for mechanical engineers, and so on. However, members of the educationalcommunity have objected to this approach

for the rider. Pictures were taken of the rider(s) in what they considered acomfortable position. Then, from the position, scaled reference points were established and usedto determine vehicle geometry as shown in Figure 3. Figure 3 – Reference Points for Rider Position and Corresponding Vehicle GeometryAn ME theoretical approach7 was used to determine the optimum location of the rider to thevehicle. Counterintuitive to the adage that a lower center of gravity is more stable than a highercenter of gravity, a higher center of gravity was chosen. Reasoning is similar to why it is easierto balance a rod, with a mass on one end of the rod, on your hand, where the mass is on the endaway from your hand, rather than at the end resting on your

conducted in order to answer two research questions. Theinitial survey was to collect baseline data on students’ knowledge related to Sustainability andSustainable Design. Four groups of students were selected for participation; comparativeanalyses were then carried out to identify the differences between the freshman and seniorgroups and between the students majoring in Civil and Mechanical Engineering. The responsesfrom the freshman groups demonstrated that they are familiar with the term and recognize theimportance of Sustainability, and the responses reflect that their understanding of Sustainabilityis highly associate with the three “R”s (Reducing, Reusing and Recycling). The responses fromthe senior groups also show their familiarity with the

studentsand faculty alike, is an integral part of teaching students about the importance of broadlyconsidering alternative solution paths when solving complex problems.During the early stages of a project, students are instructed to broadly and thoroughlyexplore the background to a problem, perform competitive benchmarks, and researchprior art. Students are encouraged to make frequent and direct contact with sponsormentors and to develop a productive working relationship. Ultimately, a major part oftheir grade will depend upon their working relationship with their sponsor mentor(s).Project success often appears to be directly correlated with this vital relationship. Tocultivate teamwork, students partake in interactive group exercises that teach

Definition: A Bezier curve is a mathematically defined curve used in graphic applications. The curve is defined by four points: the initial position and the terminating position (anchors) and two separate middle points (handles). The shape of a Bezier curve can be altered by moving the handles. The mathematical method for drawing curves was created by Pierre Bézier in the late 1960's for the manufacturing of automobiles at Renault in order to handle the curvilinear shapes of modern design. Computer graphics tools lend themselves to the use of such a technique
