for building educational resiliency and academic success of blacks,Hispanics, and women (Barton & Osborne, 1995; Borman & Overman, 2004; Brotman &Moore, 2008; Castro-Olivo, et al., 2013; Williams & Portman, 2014) all of whom are currentlyunder-represented in STEM fields.Specifically, the work being done in the field is not focused solely on biology (the context for thedesign challenges in this work). In the hybrid semesters additional in-class time was available for the students tobreak into groups and spend time attempting to write their own mission statement, list ofconstraints and evaluation criteria. engineers capable of solving the grand challenges this new century brings.Reviewing the LiteratureStudent engagement theory pioneer Alexander Astin hypothesized that the more involved astudent is socially and academically in college, the more he or she will learn due to increases inmotivation and interaction with faculty, fellow students, and other campus activities. 4,5,6Unfortunately Astin found that choosing an engineering major had “negative effects on a varietyof satisfaction outcomes: faculty, quality of instruction, Student Life, opportunities to takeinterdisciplinary courses, … the overall college experience, … writing skills, listening skills,[and] Cultural Awareness.”6 He did find that engineering majors reported the highest growth

The main purpose of the reflective writing assignments was to understand studentperceptions of the influence of multidisciplinary collaboration on design, as well as to documenttheir experiences using digital prototyping tools.SurveyThe online survey was conducted during the final exam period, after the final designpresentations. statement challenged students to “Design a way for individuals without lotsof skill and experience skiing or snowboarding to transport themselves on snow.” The Snowproblem was adapted from prior design research.21,22 The problem statement included a shortbackground context, a needs statement, and an ideation goal. The language of the problemstatement was carefully crafted to be neutral in the sense of not encouraging either moreincremental or more radical ideas.
