presentation draws near, panicensues, and the various teams typically help one another. I have seen this situation happen onthe eve of most of the presentations, usually around 2:00 AM. One student told me, after it wasall over, that the experience was the highlight of his student career at (university). He said thecooperation among teams, sharing ideas for fixing problems and helping one another, bondedthem together.It almost always takes longer to implement a process than originally expected. This concept ismade real to the students by the Rube Goldberg project.Panic is a great generator of “action rather than planning.” There is a subset of “technical types”who spend long periods of time calculating and never get around to actually doing

Our plans for solar imagingmodules include the following topical descriptions of each module: 1. Microstructure of Polycrystalline Silicon Wafers. Images of solar cells directly show the microstructure, particularly grain boundaries. Unlike metals, silicon reveals its grain structure without the need for any sample preparation. Students can apply many of algorithms (including ASTM protocols) used to parameterize microstructure from images. this flaw so that we can obtain a better measure of student attitude toward the inquiry-based and conventional laboratory exercises.Future WorkUsing the knowledge gained from implementing the inquiry-based experiment in the fluidmechanic laboratory class, we will improve the inquiry-based laboratory exercises for usesubsequent academic terms. Further analysis is required on the survey data collected for Fall2007. In particular, patterns of responses amongst subgroups in the study need to be identified. the survey and interview protocol were organized around Wiggins andMcTighe’s backward design (1997) framework for designing effective learning experiences.Wiggins and McTighe presented a “backward design process” (p.9) composed of three mainstages: a) identifying the desired learning outcomes -- the content of the lesson, b) determiningthe acceptable evidence of learning also called the assessment method, and c) planning theexperiences and instructional approach or pedagogy. We added Usability aspects to evaluatequality of students experience using the simulation since this could have an affect on theirresponse. The course focuses on planning, development, andimplementation of an engineering design project, which includes formal report writing, projectdocumentation, group presentations, and project demonstrations. The goal of these courses is todemonstrate the ability to manage a major project involving the design and implementation ofproducts with a mixture of electrical and mechanical elements as a member of a productinnovation and/or development team. In these project-based courses, the students are expected toeffectively manage their time and team efforts to produce a working prototype of a product inthree ten-week quarters. Progress and formal reports, and oral presentations constitute integralcomponents of this course

, was 3.28 with 75% of the students scoring a 3 or 4. As withall our assessment in the engineering department, our standard for reporting that the students areachieving the outcomes of the project is 75%. These results indicate the students are achievingthis particular outcome. We are pleased with these results, but despite stressing the importanceof clearly organized and thoroughly-commented MATLAB scripts, we would like to have ahigher percentage of outcome achievement. We plan to increase the emphasis in the laboratoryreport requirements with additional exercises the students must perform using their MATLABcode and additional engineering design analysis from the increased use.Based on the self-reporting of students on the project survey

possibilities. However, the spectral density of the samples might not deliver all of theinitially planned combinations (and histograms). Although Tables (2) and (3) show a promisingset of such unique features (and their corresponding Histograms), at the time, there was noguarantee to physically compile such distinct sets from the 200 available springs.Fortunately, (as will be shown in section V-1,) the recommended springs provide normaldistribution. Additionally, the fact that only 150 out of the 200 springs would be utilized (forcreation of the six (6) sets of 25 springs,) makes the choices available for the desired ranges andfrequencies significantly broader.
