It utilizes a 1000 mL graduated cylinder filled with water and placedadjacent to the bridge to create the applied pressure (voltage) to the pipe network (circuit).Swagelok valves represent the four strain gages in the legs of the circuit. The valves areconnected by ¼" OD tubing and 45º brass fittings. Manometer tubes, (Fig. 2) are located in-between the valves, allowing the students to measure the water column height or head (voltage)and the changes caused by opening or closing one or more valves. The velocity profile for fully developed laminar pipe flow is parabolic in shape but there are four different layers of the turbulent pipe flow velocity profile including viscous sub- layer, buffer layer, overlap layer and the turbulent layer. Experimental turbulent pipe velocity profiles are often compared with the power law velocity profile. The influence of rotation on pipe flow is determined by the swirl number S = Uw /Um where Uw =D/2 is the velocity of the pipe wall and  is the angular velocity of the rotating pipe. demonstrates some basic concepts of subsonic flow using a nominal 50m/s wind tunnel. A variable pitch NACA 0015 symmetric airfoil equipped with 11 surfacepressure taps spans the tunnel test section and a multi-tube water manometer board is used tomonitor the surface pressures and provides a visual display of the dynamic changes associatedwith varying angles of attack. A Pitot-static (Prandtl) tube is mounted at the front of the testsection to measure the static and impact pressures required to determine the flow velocity. . The student teams then wrote about their optimization process andresults in an IMRAD lab report. By completing the project, students fulfilled several of thecourse goals, such as demonstrating an effective design process, generating multiple solutions,analyzing possible solutions, and seeing the design through to completion.
