. Page 26.314.2Pedagogical ContextA controls laboratory experience should prepare students for a career in control systems 4 byperforming the following steps: building the system, 5 modeling and analyzing the system, developing a controller to meet performance requirements, simulating the controller and system, observing the physical system, collecting the data, and using the data to improve the systemmodel or control tuning. 6,7 Experiments based on DC motors 1,2 and inverted pendulums 6,8 havebeen identified to meet these goals for controls laboratory experiences. To date, five experiments have been designed for our new kit: introduction to the sensors, introduction to the equipment, first principles system identification, black box

possible career opportunities. The analysis material was transferred Page 26.1480.2to ECE 102, with most non-EE topics removed to make time for more EE focused material. ECE103 took on the role of teaching intermediate-level programming in C. Surveys from industryand former students made it clear that the single programming course required of EE studentswas not meeting the expectations of prospective employers. So, it was decided that ECE 102would expand the MATLAB portion of the course to include general programming in addition tocovering its calculation and graphing tools. Effectively, in our courses MATLAB has become aprimer for C due to

Figure 6. Maximal Stresses in the Plates Another assessment was collected from student responses to the first three questions inthe class self-reflection. Students were asked to rank their answers to these questions from 1 to 5,with 1 indicating that the student strongly disagrees with the statement and 5 indicating that he orshe strongly agrees with the statement. 1) Do you agree that what you have learned from MAE 441 is important to your professional career? 2) Do you agree that the class project enriches your learning experience about using NASTRAN/PATRAN for modeling and analysis? 3) Do you agree that the laboratory manual help you in this class? The mean score and associated standard deviation for each question
