difficultto creatively apply to practical engineering problems. Felder and Brent confirm this intuitionwith several studies that show students need repetitive practice with consistent feedback todevelop new skills (1). Simply showing students how to solve a particular problem doesn’tguarantee they can apply these concepts on their own. With these ideas in mind, the lab morphedfrom a traditional recitation to weekly programming challenges solved in a group setting. Thelaboratory and lecture now focus on the C++ and MATLAB languages with plans to alsoincorporate Python in future semesters. This paper details the changes to the laboratory portion of the course to use problem-based learning (PBL) and just-in-time teaching (JiTT) in a collaborative

engineers do.IntroductionEngineering students often have difficulty explaining their chosen profession to non-engineeringstudents. Their motivation to finish an engineering degree and to fit within their socialenvironment can be enhanced by doing something interesting yet useful for the community. Withthis in mind, mechatronics engineering students approached the Humans vs. Robots WorkoutChallenge lab. The main justification for the lab was to use various pedagogical learninginstruments such as project-based learning, peer learning, and increased student engagement, allin the function of learning basic robotic concepts and robot programming, as well as developingcommunication skills. Student engagement was directed towards increasing awareness

professor wants to test his research hypothesis by quantifying the bandwidth of human arm movement and comparing it between “healthy” subjects and stroke patients. His idea is to measure the acceleration of the wrist while the subject is flexing and extending the elbow joint on a table with an object of various size and weight in the hand (e.g. tennis ball, water bottle, etc.). With potential large-scale deployment/experiments in mind, he desires a relatively inexpensive setup that can be easily operated by a lay person who is not necessarily technically oriented; the system should be operable, for example, by a nurse with, say, one hour of tutorial at most. You are an engineer who is aiding in
