This was when his views of issues of equity started to surface. Each participant’s experiences contribute to a fuller sense of the challenges facing gendered and/orracially-minoritized students in introductory engineering programming courses. Interestingly, theauthority and social infrastructures proved to be the most important for the three student participants, reflecting existing scholarship about the importance of community, mentorship, and student dispositionsof confidence in programming education. The physical and operational infrastructures also discouragedactive participation by all students, while challenges with the economic infrastructure didn’t surface inthese interviews. 7. Focus groups consisted of four tofive participants, lasted about one hour, and were conducted at the end of each semester. Thefirst author led all focus groups, with the second or last author as a secondary interviewer andnotetaker. At the end of each focus group, the first author compiled these notes, information onhow the focus group went, and initial impressions of the data into summarized memos.Guiding questions prompted participants to reflect on their interest in their current majors andminors (if applicable) as well as how this interest has changed since the previous focus group. The guiding questions targeting interest were

At their private,four-year liberal arts college, Zayn reflected on the experience of having a nonbinary professorto look up to: I was so excited when [the nonbinary faculty member] came here, and I got to take a class with them last semester. And it’s so nice just feeling like I see someone who is also nonbinary. The participant went on the say: It means a lot. Just because it’s like [nonbinary professor] [has] a very similar experience to me in that [they have] gone through the classes, [they] know what this field is like and how it’s very male dominated. But not just male dominated, but also very heteronormative and cisgendered.Due to the underrepresentation of nonbinary individuals in engineering

The aim of this research study is to address the researchquestion: What are the changes in students’ conceptualizations of engineering design over the Page 1 of 13course of their undergraduate education? This information can support the optimization of coursesto better support student learning of engineering design.Beginning engineering designers engage in engineering design in different ways than informeddesigners [6] - [8]. For example, informed designers are better able to weigh options and tradeoffsthan beginning designers. Additionally, informed designers are more reflective in their

Maker culture, or theculture of makers in and outside of makerspace, has a white and masculine history whichexcludes those outside of these norms [12]. While makerspaces are not always reflective ofmaker culture, research shows that makerspace still uphold white and masculine norms[11].Recent research [1], [12], [13] recognizes that the benefits of makerspaces are only available tothose students who are involved in making experiences and postulate that makerspaces may beanother STEM space that recreates and reinforces the hegemonic norms often present in theSTEM domain. Therefore, it is important to understand the various reasons students get involvedin makerspaces and focus on

Two studies assessed students’ motivation as a compositemultidimensional construct comprising of student scores on task relevancy, self-determination,self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation together and named it motivation [31],[35]. The results from their study show that need for cognition was an important construct andthat its effect was mediated by students’ motivation. Similarly, researchers have also examineddeeper processing strategies, such as reflective thinking, are associated with the level ofcognition necessary for conceptual change learning [38]. In order to do that, we focus onboth Asian American and Asian international college students within the engineeringdiscipline, reflecting our centered research interest. Considering the scope of ourstudy and the research questions, we established relevant studies in our review asstudies that satisfy the following three conditions: a) the presence of Asian students,b) a focus on college engineering majors, and c) relevance to experiences ofdiscrimination.Selecting Studies We conducted the literature search using a variety of scholarly databases, including Semantic Scholar, Google Scholar, ERIC
