Paretti is an Associate Professor of Engineering Education at Virginia Tech, where she co- directs the Virginia Tech Engineering Communications Center (VTECC). Her research focuses on com- munication in engineering design, interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, design education, and gender in engineering. She was awarded a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation to study expert teaching in capstone design courses, and is co-PI on numerous NSF grants exploring com- munication, design, and identity in engineering. making the learning experience engaging and motivatingfor students. This paper addresses results of a series of pilot studies that utilized hand-held devices,specifically an Analog Discovery (AD) Board, to support experimental centric, hands-on learningin introductory engineering classes. Pilots of use of the AD Boards were shown to be successfulacross a variety of instructional settings. The research undergirding the findings for this paper isderived from a collaborative grant-funded project supporting a consortium of 13 publicHistorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) investigating the impact of using hands-onexperimental-based pedagogical techniques on instruction to teach circuits concepts inintroductory engineering
