CS II, may alsoend up taking the same higher-level courses as students that have taken CS I and CS II.We study student performance in the two courses CS I and CS II to investigate the relationshipbetween grades in these two courses and advanced courses such as Object-oriented ProblemSolving, Data Structures, and Capstone Software Engineering course. The analysis of student datahelps us answer the research questions.Software Engineering is an advanced course that utilizes concepts learned in foundation coursesas well as 200- and 300-level courses. Students take up a term project and go through all phasesof software development i.e., Requirement gathering, Design, Development, Testing andDeployment. It is for this reason that we consider

independentlyin unstructured work sessions to accomplish the project tasks. There is little faculty supervisionand the student must be self-reliant and motivated to make progress in the project while alsoknowing when to ask for help. A third distinction is that the results of an independent study mayresult in novel preliminary findings that can contribute to new knowledge or original work. Acapstone project is typically focused on application and the results obtained may not be original.Students may use an independent study as an opportunity to further their Senior Capstone projectby finishing any additional work needed to conclude the project. These types of experiences arevery similar to the typical Capstone project and are not the focus of this

undergraduates reconstructed the P&M system as part of a senior capstone project. The reconstructed system utilized readily-available Linksys routers connected to the referenceantenna (SOURCE) and the antenna-under-test (AUT). Open-source firmware (DD-WRT) wasloaded on the routers to access the RSSI level versus position. National Instruments LabVIEWsoftware controlled two stepper motors for elevation and azimuth orientation of the AUT.The senior project obtained coarse pattern measurements of a test antenna, however difficultiesmentioned in the original article reappeared with the WSU recreation of the P&M prototype.Challenges encountered with the 1st prototype included a) motor control hardware allowed onedirection of travel, b) a homemade belt

topics? If this capstone sequence is truly as effective as we believe in preparing engineers for their futureemployment, we should be able to see a discernible difference. While we did not set out to createthis capstone as a pedagogical research project, we are discovering daily that the teachingplatform is one that deserves to be studied to fully appreciate and understand the effectiveness ofthe material on student success. relationship of these components. Oncethe students understand the fundamental knowledge of signal and systems and digital and analogcircuits in sophomore and junior years, they learn how to effectively “divide” complex problems, refine the decomposition, and integrate the pieces. Finally, the students compile, synthesize, andapply the various techniques that they have learned in previous courses into actual solutions toreal-world problems through capstone projects.Curriculum integration is a methodology widely used by educators to implement the “divide andconquer” strategy and improve students’ education experience 17, 18. In this project, verticalintegration 19 is employed. The importance and curricular need for vertical integration was firstexpressed

within each metric. For the performance-based grading system used in SEED,students are provided with criteria and targets ahead of time. Teams receive a grade based onhow closely their system performance matches the best performing team in each specific designcriteria.Study MethodsTo assess the impact of SEED Lab on students’ skills relevant to engineering practice, a casestudy activity was developed as an open-ended prompt to elicit students’ concepts of the designand development process. The case study activity presents a hypothetical capstone design projectand asks students to describe their general approach to completing the project, rather than for aspecific solution. The case study activity was chosen as a way to elicit students

valuable in [2]. In designingtheir courses on embedded systems, they stressed critical thinking about the system design ratherthan the embedded system specifications. They also structured the material so that a sequence ofexercises would culminate in a design-focused capstone project. We modeled this approach veryclosely in designing our lab and final project structure. In [3], El-Abd conducts a survey of courses utilizing Arduino-based embedded systems. Thesurvey highlights that excellent assessment methods for such experiential courses tend to besome combination of presentations with associated demonstrations. Our course follows thismodality, where student grades are largely based upon their project presentations anddemonstration of their

thecourse is the primary evaluation mechanism to determine how well the course achieves this goal. However, several students have also mentioned that this course helped prepare them for designingtheir senior capstone project. Therefore, we are planning to implement an exit survey for thesenior design sections within our department to ask students if they took this course and if/how ithelped them with their senior project. We also plan to examine the senior project scores todetermine if there is any correlation between taking this course and improved senior projectperformance. We will also investigate methods to scale up the enrollment size of the course. This coursereached capacity each time it was offered with several students on the waiting list

decisions and critique the accuracy of the information. Students who evaluate well can provide reflections on approaches taken to solve a problem and demonstrate their ability to assess underlying concepts in the process of choosing the best among multiple alternative solutions. ● Create: putting elements together to produce a new pattern or original work. In engineering, the previous levels of the taxonomy culminate to the design of a component or system that invokes all previous levels of the taxonomy. Such efforts to create are often stimulated in capstone design classes but can also be invoked in smaller projects in lower- level courses.Promoting the integration, design, and evaluation capabilities of students is
