workforceneeded the rate of graduates in these areas needs to be increased. 2 In addition, an improvedteaching and learning environment is required at undergraduate engineering disciplines toprepare graduates capable of pursuing engineering related careers. Page 24.158.2There is an existing crisis in engineering education: stagnant or decreasing student enrollment, underprepared students, and instructional methods disconnected from students’ preferredmethods of communication and interaction. To address these problems, we are implementing, assessing and evaluating effective teaching strategies that integrate technology-based materialsintended to enhance

, researchers explain that a student’s intrinsic motivation hasthe greatest effect on his or her potential to genuinely enjoy activities and careers, expandknowledge, and seek out new challenges2, 3, 4.While research has proven that grades and other external structures can motivate students toperform well in classrooms5, 6, the authors of this report examine extrinsic and intrinsicmotivations and their effects on students’ performance in this class. Pintrich7 points to fivegeneral constructs in understanding the motivations of students in the classroom. Additionally,he offers suggestions as to how classroom instruction might be designed to encourage studentmotivation.First, Pintrich7 notes that courses should be designed to encourage self-efficacy and

and 4 seek to build intuition and curiosity in the students by providing a broadoverview of EE and CpE. These three goals work together to pique the students’ interest enoughto continue in the major. Conversations with advanced students in the major indicate that a fewwere frustrated by the lack of detail in the first course. Their comments indicate a hunger thatwill be fed as they move through the rest of the major.Another strong motivator for students choosing engineering as a career path is self-efficacy orthe belief in one’s ability to perform a task within a specific domain. If a student believes she orhe will succeed, then success is more likely. Jones and others [7] have shown there is a stronglink between self-efficacy and persistence

Watch interactive online circuit problems b. Test the circuits with CircuitLab and, c. Build the circuit and measure its performance. The myDAQ, coupled with simulations in CircuitLab, fosters independence early in a student’sacademic career, enabling test and experimentation outside of

interested in a career in STEM. A summer camp for high school students, designed toincrease interest in STEM, was hosted at the University Oklahoma during the summer of 2013.Amongst the many engineering-focused projects available for the students to complete was theCapacitive Touch Sensor Workshop, which was created by the ECE department. During thisproject, students constructed a functional touch keypad using only an Arduino and householdsupplies, such as cardboard, aluminum foil, and tape. At the conclusion of the project, studentswere able to take their completed keypads home along with a flash drive that included all of thesoftware and information they would need to improve or modify their device. This workshop notonly allowed students to create

objective of this session is to review and emphasize concepts that are important to developing safety-critical and secure embedded systems.4. Embedded Systems Research: This is a non-traditional UnLecture where the focus is on academic research experience rather than industry experience. Undergraduate students will be teamed with graduate students for this exercise, and the graduate students will serve as session moderators. In the retrospective phase, the emphasis will be on topics such as developing a research hypothesis, experimental methods, industry jobs versus research careers, and examples of graduate research projects in embedded systems. In the examination phase, students will present examples of how classroom learning aids

, and process real-world signalsprovides numerous benefits in classroom and laboratory settings. Furthermore, exposure to SDRis increasingly important for students wishing to pursue careers in the telecommunication, networking, and radar fields. An undergraduate laboratory can be outfitted with relatively high-performance SDRs at a reasonable cost.It was recently discovered that USB digital television tuners can be used as SDR receivers.Since this discovery, the tuners have been successfully used in a wide variety of applications. Ata cost less than $20 (USD), these so-called “RTL-SDR” devices set a new price point for SDRtechnology that is particularly attractive within an educational context. This paper presents the use of these low-cost SDRs

hands-on activities, and to enhance other forms of collaborative and active learning.Consistency in coverage had been a problem with this particular course, which is taught everyterm and has 8-9 sections of 45-50 students each. The instructors are senior PhD students, manyof whom are interested in academic careers. A survey of the instructors showed a largeinconsistency in coverage, upwards of 20% mismatch in topics between sections. High levels ofinconsistency across multiple sections of a course is not unusual even among experiencedinstructors when the syllabus is considered to be “packed with material.” Blending the coursewith all course lectures online and common homework and exams across all sections removesmost of the inconsistency across

is the hallmark of the engineering profession, and students should expectto have some developing skill in application by the time they graduate from an engineeringdegree program.VI. Course ObjectivesThe goal of the Measurement and Automation course is to provide the students with anexperiential learning environment that promotes retention of the ideas covered and the skills tocontinue the self-learning process throughout their respective engineering careers. Because the Page 24.891.12course has only recently been moved in this direction, there is insufficient current data availableto measure whether those objectives have been met. Future
