. 2019 [1] showed that very few programs offerlabs in Thermodynamics courses. Our program has integrated experimental design into somethermodynamic laboratories to strengthen students’ understanding of fundamental concepts. OurIntroduction to Thermodynamics course requires students to learn basic yet complicatedconcepts, such as determining properties of pure substances, calculating heat and workexchanged during a process, and the first and second laws of thermodynamics before undertakingcomplex applications such as thermodynamic cycles or combustion systems. theycan meet the energy demand of a growing population for both the short-term (5 years) andlong-term (100 years). In their analysis, the students first consider providing power throughlocally available natural gas and coal which has an expected finite lifetime based on the Hubbertcurve for coal and natural gas extraction. The first plan then for energy is to potentially use thesefossil fuel resources in conventional combustion power plants that follow thermodynamicscycles such as the Rankine, Brayton and Combined Cycles. classes met on Saturdays for 2 or 3 hours of instruction for 5 weeks over the wintersemester. The emphasis was on hands-on experiential learning in a fun and relaxing environment. Wedrew activities from the ANS ‘Navigating Nuclear” curriculum as well as other related STEAM sites suchas NASA and DOE. Students who successfully complete d the classes were awarded certificates ofcompletion (Fig. 16). Instructors for these classes came from our STEAM faculty at our campus plus ourcollaborating universities as well as the nuclear industry and our local K-12 teachers. As pertains to ourcollege students, we had them participating in the outreach (Fig. 7), conferences (Figs. 8 & 9) and hopingfor rigorous summer internships to be identified with the
