This paper focuses on the integration of a cost-effective, easy to implement design projectthat is appropriate for any freshman-level Engineering Design Graphics course but is particularlyappropriate for community college settings.BackgroundDevelopment of Dedicated MakerspaceSpurred by a requirement to integrate design projects into the Engineering Design Graphicscurriculum by the Illinois Community College’s Illinois Articulation Agreement (IAI), theCollege of Lake County (CLC) Engineering department developed design projects forEngineering Design Graphics

ofstudents created isometric shapes with snap cubes. Each partner drew the correspondingorthographic projection, fostering teamwork and spatial reasoning with immediate peer feedback. After Lesson 7, the final activity involved wooden geometric shapes (Figure 2b). Studentscombined pieces into composite structures, specified a rotation axis and angle, and their partnersvisualized and executed the transformation. This exercise deepened their understanding of spatialtransformations and rotations. These ungraded activities provided iterative learning opportunities, with feedback from peers andthe instructor, preparing students for more advanced assignments and projects later in the course. 4.5 Mini Design Project: Puzzle CubeThe mini-design project

in solving mental rotation problems grew significantly. This papershared detailed results, implications, as well as curricular plans. 21. Introduction1.1 BackgroundSpatial thinking refers to a set of mental skills that allow us to understand the position of objectsand how the objects relate to each other [5] [7]. These skills are required for STEM-relatedcareers, ranging from engineers visualizing how components are assembled, how a circuitdiagram can be represented on a circuit board, scientists visualizing molecular structures, andcomputer programmers visualizing the structure of the code they are writing.
