In 2019, the 38th Marine Commandant’s Planning Guidance emphasizedthe combination of leadership with innovation, saying “For the Marine Corps, meaningfulinnovation is not just having great thoughts and concepts rather, it is about translating greatthoughts and concepts into action.” [2]. presented a reflexive model of an identity-based approach toengineering leadership instruction. Moreover, the model may be applied in a wide variety ofengineering classes, given the central role that leadership plays in training for the profession.That said, in a lower-division setting, the lower-division lesson plan may provide an introductionand contextualization of leadership in the engineering profession. Therefore, it might be mostappropriate for an engineering survey course, as students are introduced to various aspects of theengineering profession.The upper-division lesson plan can provide richer insight into how engineering leadership ispracticed, as well as practical scaffolding for students’ pursuing their own professionaldevelopment

Outcome 5 mentions leadership,collaboration, inclusivity, and several management tasks, such as setting goals, planning tasks,and meeting objectives, to clarify the meaning of effective team functioning. Because our programs have courses that require groups of students to work as a team, ourprograms generally meet Outcome 5. However, we would like to do better than merely meet theoutcome. Standing in our way are two challenges: As engineers with expertise in other topics,curating instructional materials (learning activities and assessments) related to teamworkeffectiveness is challenging. enhancing their leadership skills in DEI. The post-coursesurvey asked students whether their expectations were met and their plans to use what theylearned in the future, such as applying leadership skills.We performed quantitative and qualitative analysis on the data collected. For the Likert-stylequestions, we conducted descriptive statistics and t-tests using Microsoft Excel to evaluate trendsand their significance between the pre- and post-course surveys. For open-ended questions, wethemed the data to organize, categorize, and gain a deeper understanding of students’ experienceswith the course in relation to the learning outcomes [12]. participated in the Fall 2022 Leadership Community of Practice atCalifornia State University, Los Angeles, a VHHE HSI. Fellows shared learning about hiddenmenus, leadership identities, and oppressive practices that could shift and change between theirprevious and new roles as faculty and chairs. Our future work in this area will continue toadvance research in the development of mental models towards supportive educationalecosystems. We also plan to share our results with others through workshops and conversationwith colleagues across the country. Students practiced the three attitudes using role play activities. Therewere no additional formal reinforcements though there may have been further discussions withinstructors during the course [6].
