Summer Engineering Experience for Girls (SEE): An Evolving Hands-On Role for the Engineering LibrarianAbstractThe summer of 2009 marked the third year that the EQT Corporation sponsored a two-week Summer Engineering Experience for Girls (SEE) at Carnegie Mellon University. The program’s goal is to provide junior high girls the opportunity to learn of the appeal ofengineering as a career choice by demonstrating how engineering contributions make theworld “a better place.” The girls complete an application and attach a copy of their latestreport card, a teacher recommendation form, and a one page essay explaining theirinterest in SEE. Twenty+ participants per year attend the July program free of charge.Librarians are invited to

school students.Typical of these sessions is the one requested by Bruk Berhane in 2009 for twenty-seven GearUp participants. Mr. Berhane’s main goal was for these high school students to find literaturerelated to future college choices based on career options with description of education/training,job prospects, job responsibilities and salary. We explained the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics(www.bls.gov/bls/occupation.htm) and the State of Maryland’s Career and WorkforceInformation (www.dllr.state.md.us/lmi/index.shtml) websites, both good places to start forinformation on jobs, salary outlook, and employment statistics. We demonstrated severaldifferent search strategies using Masterfile Premier and Academic Search Premier, Ebscodatabases

students can take away from their technicaleducation is the ability to become ‘curious and persistent continuous learners,’ to quote PurdueUniversity’s Purdue Engineer of 2020 outcomes statement.2 The engineering community haslong realized the need for lifelong learning, as evidenced by the theme of the 1978 ASEE AnnualConference of ‘Career Management – Lifelong Learning.’ However, with the publication ofEducating the Engineer of 2020, which recommends, ‘…as well as delivering content, engineering schools must teach engineering students how to learn, and must play a continuingrole along with professional organizations in facilitating lifelong learning,’(pg. 55)  lifelonglearning has taken on much greater visibility in the engineering curriculum

whether or not it would be worth his while to obtain or consult the article.J. B. Johnson had a very productive career as an engineer and his many publications testify to itsscholarly production. Not only was Johnson a productive engineer, a writer, a good teacher andadministrator, but also through F. E. Turneaure9 we can see a very strong interest in thehumanities. Here the creator of The Engineering Index expresses his opinion about his studentsneed for learning: I beseech you, therefore, while yet students, to try to broaden your interests, extend your horizons now into other fields, even but for a bird’s-eye view, and profit, so far as possible, by the atmosphere of universal knowledge which you can breathe here

required to complete Drexel University’sIntroduction to Engineering Design (ENGR 101-103) program. This is a three course, year-longengineering design sequence which aims “to provide students with an understanding of thesimilarities, differences, and career options available in the various engineering disciplines, theimportance of multidisciplinary teams to innovation, an appreciation for engineeringmeasurements, errors, units, significant figures and reproducibility, and the ability tocommunicate relevant technical information concisely and incorporate experimental dataclearly.” In the course sequence, all incoming engineering students representing the disciplinesof Architectural Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Sciences and Health Systems
