an ongoing collaboration between anEngineering Fundamentals professor and the Engineering Librarian at a largesuburban university in the Southeast. In this study, a purposive sample of sixstudents in an Introduction to Engineering course participated in semi-structuredinterviews regarding the student experience of course- integrated GenAI research intheir class.Researchers utilized Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory to analyze the data[13]. ChatGPT-3.5 was not utilized in the analysis or in writing this article. Thisstudy was approved by the Institutional Review Board (Reference Number794713) at the University of LouisvilleParticipantsAll study participants were enrolled in the Introduction to Engineering course atthe University of

, and combustion. However, broader interest in machine learning has been sparked by the release of generative AI(GAI) tools in the past few years. Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT or GoogleGemini have brought machine learning to the creation of text. Similarly, GAI tools for imagecreation, such as DALL-E or Adobe Firefly, allow for the creation of images based on text-basedqueries. In education, this has sparked a great deal of interest among students and faculty in theethical application of this technology in the classroom. In “AI in Higher Ed: Hype, Harm, orHelp,” Anthology, an educational technology company, surveyed university student leadersabout student use and perception of AI [4]. Over 30% of university leaders believed the

in the search process. At this point, authorsmanually rejected or excluded additional articles that did not meet the topic of the managementof evidence synthesis services in libraries. The resulting list of articles selected is included inAppendix 1.One author manually reviewed the abstracts of each article. If the article included information onsystematic review services, training, or skill development, the author then read or skimmed eacharticle. If the article did not mention those aspects, it was discarded. Another author loaded smallgroups of articles into an institutional subscription to ChatGPT-4o in a closed university researchenvironment to produce summaries of the works. The team members then met to discuss theirfindings and the

promising an opportunity to participate in the raffle for a gift card. As oursurvey and recruited participants were limited to our institution and targeted populations, itshould be noted that our findings may not be applicable or generalizable to other institutions. An area for future consideration would be to include more survey questions related tostudents’ understanding and use of artificial intelligence (AI). While the survey did have onequestion related to their use of ChatGPT specifically, any future studies of students’ informationliteracy skills should include the use of AI in information retrieval and citation. This wouldhighlight a gap in understanding how students engage with AI and the ethical and practicalchallenges they might

time.Holly mentions “doing research” a few times throughout her interview but is vague aboutwhat this entails. When pushed for details, she describes relying primarily on Google andGoogle Scholar. She sees Google as most helpful for finding what she terms as “hard facts,”such as how an air-based cooling system works. She uses Google Scholar to find morescholarly sources to supplement her work, but finds that the language is often “veryscientific” and difficult to understand. She also mentions using ChatGPT to help explainthings in simpler terms if her tutor is not available to answer questions. She seems generallyhappy to ask questions of her lecturers and her classmates, but is reluctant to admit shedoesn’t know something in front of people she
