Conclusions from the 2018 SE3 reportseek to inform engineering firms as to how to improve work place culture in order address areasof inequity within the profession and understand how to retain talent from a diverse populationof engineers. This paper examines how these findings can be used to prepare a similar diversegroup of students to enter the workplace with the tools to craft a successful career path. Further,it discusses how engineering management education programs can incorporate the topicshighlighted by the NCSEA SE3 committee concerning strategies that firm leadership canimplement on the management level to address employee values that the report shows to beundervalued. The initial mentoringprogram design was developed through two Lean Six Sigma projects, where they collected voiceof the customer (mentors and mentees) data, and designed the program. The program waspiloted in Fall 2019, spearheaded by the Women Engineering Program in the School ofEngineering, the director and a student graduate assistant. The success of the pilot program wasassessed in three ways: 1) number of mentor/mentee pairs starting the program, compared to theinitial number interested; 2) retention of women in engineering and science during the programperiods; and 3) through mentor and mentee reflections.
