The syllabus quiz covers important points that studentsshould be informed before starting the course. With unlimited attempts, the completion of asyllabus quiz with 100% success releases the first learning module.Course EvaluationThe renovated course was offered first time during the fall 2011 and students were asked to Page 25.787.5participate in the study that reflects on their experience of the online course delivery. Preference of Online Teaching to On-Campus.We also listed a number of specific teaching tools and techniques and asked faculty to score theirimportance for delivering a successful online course (See Figure 5). Except for the live lectureswith audio and proctored exams all other teaching tools received an average score higher than 3meaning they would be preferred. The top of the list included practices such as ConfirmingUnderstanding of Syllabus, usage of Emails, Tracking student activities, Self

AC 2012-4451: A REVIEW OF CAPSTONE COURSE DESIGNS USED ININDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING PROGRAMSDr. Denise H. Bauer, University of Idaho, Moscow Denise H. Bauer received her Ph.D. in industrial engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 2007. She received a M.S. in industrial engineering as well as a B.S. in engineering dcience from the University of Tennessee. Bauer’s research in engineering education centers around the use of technology mainly as a means of communication for remote engineering group work. She received a NAE CASEE postdoctoral fellowship to study what communication methods students used to communicate with group members during online classes and their feelings on their importance. She is also

regular basis to discuss the course design progress, instructional resources development, online activities, etc. that will help students achieve theirgoals.Clear communication and consistency in program policies and expectations impact studentsatisfaction in online programs. The syllabus is a critical element of a well-designed onlinecourse as it communicates course details, policies, and expectations to students [20]. The MEMDirector has created a syllabus template based on recommendations from the literature [21], [22],[23] that is used across all courses in the program. While instructor policies may vary, studentsknow where to look for that information in each course. The ID reviews the syllabus templatewith the SME and clarifies ambiguities

same department, tookturns evaluating and providing feedback to each other throughout the year. The process consistedof three parts: a classroom observation, feedback on course materials (syllabus, forms ofassessment such as exams and homework assignments, etc.), and a reflection meeting with allthree members of the triangle to provide feedback and opportunities for discussion. They foundthat the biggest benefit of their process was that faculty valued the individualized feedback theyreceived from the other members of their Triangle, as well as the observations they made of theircolleagues’ teaching. The process fostered interactions in a way that would not have occurredwithout the program, and faculty used the Teaching Triangles to devote

-time review and supplemental instructional support, theindustrial engineering department embarked on a long term project to provide online self-correcting modules in the areas of finance, entrepreneurship, economic valuation, andmanagement science tools. This paper discusses a strategy for designing web-based tutorialsthat can help provide an element of scaffolding necessary for a developmental approach whilesimultaneously addressing alternative learning styles. Tutorial examples along with preliminaryassessment results are provided.IntroductionCalls for greater accountability in higher education are more strident than ever. Although statedin a variety of formats, these calls may almost always be couched within two distinct butoverlapping

Academy of Engineering(NAE) has identified that the engineers of 2020 need to have strong analytical and problemsolving skills while being readily adaptable to advancing technologies in a globally connectedworld (1). A classroom syllabus typically contains conventional lectures and a group project. Itmay also contain a business example provided by a guest lecture or case study. These currentteaching methods have displayed positive results, but barriers between academia and industrycan be made seamless by incorporating both advances in technology and motivational techniques(2) . Students will find the transition to be more cohesive after they have completed a curriculumthat facilitates superior student understanding.Initial Assessment: Learning

conceptual discussions.Problem definitionTo overcome that deficiency, to improve teaching, and enhance learning of students, instructorshave over time developed novel and innovative concepts [7] that include, but are not limited, to: 1. Course projects Page 25.231.2 2. Software assignments 3. Journal reading and research 4. Online help, class handouts, and other ancillary materials. However, most of such efforts rely on instructor’s experience and his/ her desire and initiative toimprove teaching skills. Since many OR instructors are not familiar enough with the vastresources available in the area of student learning, they usually do not
