A 2002 report by Tornatsky, Waugaman, and Gray reinforced the critical importance not only of Stanford University but also several other research universities, such as Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia; Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio; and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in creating dynamic technology centers. The authors point out that research universities are becoming more innovative and entrepreneurial by taking on new roles in a knowledge economy. And other reports have shown how the research university has become more engaged in the venturing
