and thinking through writing. Exploratory writing exercise involved atopical discussion of stormwater treatment process. A formal writing exercise was given in theform of a stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) assignment which included a peer–review session prior to final grading. A reflective writing exercise was included to summarizelearning experiences through classroom and writing activities throughout the semester to identifyareas of strengths and weaknesses and accomplishments and pitfalls and areas/topics for futuredevelopment.Student learning experiences and the effectiveness of writing exercises were discussed. In Fall 2015, a “MindDump” pedagogical strategy was implemented to encourage students to read the class material forpre-exposure. The students have 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence in class to write downeverything they can remember from their reading (Whitman, 2015). Mind Dumps are used as cheatsheets during exams. The same procedure with the addition of guided reading questions wereadapted for the Spring 2016 semester. Serving as a model for waterquality and quantity management, students engaged in hands-on experiences using a small-scalewetlands setup in the Cook Laboratory for Bioscience Research at Rose-Hulman Institute ofTechnology. intentions and destinations vary by students’ gender andrace/ethnicity? We examine students’ career pathways in other majors to contextualize patterns.Data come from the longitudinal, NSF-funded Engineering Majors Survey (EMS). The firstwave of EMS (EMS 1.0) was administered at a nationally representative sample of 27 U.S.engineering schools in 2015. A second wave was administered to 1.0 respondents in 2016, and athird wave, in 2017. Our baseline sample is maximally composed of 87 1.0 respondents whomarked that they were environmental engineering majors, 695 respondents marking civilengineering majors (our “peer” major), and 6,408 respondents majoring in other engineeringfields. 2008. Presently GEO is responsible forcollection of all paper recycling in the student common areas but has drop offlocations that are maintained by the university. In April of 2008 GEO received a grant from the National RecyclingCoalition and the Coca-Cola Company to purchase beverage container recyclingbins. Thirteen bins were placed in July 2008. A staff member maintains the binsand tracks the numbers of cans and bottles being recycled in exchange forMichigan’s 10 cent bottle refund. The number of cans that were recycled arerecorded for the grant, but due to the 10 cent refund, many of the cans werestolen. Several expressed a sense that the sustainability focusdetracted from the general learning objectives of the course—i.e. that they might have receivedmore substantive writing instruction in sections of RH131 that weren’t also teachingsustainability concepts.
