the impacts of poorstormwater quality and potential combined sewer overflows on receiving water bodies,constructing treatment wetlands is a growing practice. Treatment wetlands provide a sustainableapproach of onsite stormwater and wastewater treatment by improving the quality of stormwaterrunoff that enters receiving water bodies and by reducing loads on centralized treatment plants.To provide students with a hands-on experience of applying this treatment technique, twoundergraduate students, under the direction of their advising professor, constructed a treatmentwetland in the Cook Laboratory on the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) campus.After researching constructed treatment wetlands and identifying our design requirements

For example,researchers at UCLA found that students perceived learning gains when using the Interactive SiteInvestigation Software (ISIS) to perform virtual field work such as constructing wells, collectinggroundwater samples, submitting samples for laboratory testing, and executing hydraulictransport experiments10. down the watershed. Data collected from their sample was then gathered into alarger data set representing data from all three lab sections and the three lake sites. Students werethen given the task of analyzing and reporting the data throughout the semester. To examine therelationship between field work and student attitudes and perception on field studies, students inan environmental engineering laboratory course were assigned a reflection paper before and afterperforming the field work exercise. Further reflection was given by the instructor of the labcourse on student’s performance, attitudes, and the instructor’s perception of the field study.Final results revealed a positive response by both students and instructors in regard to
