This study wasconducted during the 2013-2014 school year in the context of two courses offered at OhioNorthern University. Participants of the study included first-year programming students enrolledin a second semester introductory programming course and engineering education studentsenrolled in an upper-level elective course involved with developing lesson plans for teacherworkshops being conducted in the Dominican Republic by members of the university’s NorthernEngineers Without Boundaries student organization. The following sections of this paper willfirst examine the relevant background concerning prior research, explain the framework for thestudy, review the

designedto be technically difficult or time consuming for the students. Homework assignments are createdbased on the course objectives and focus on soft-skills that engineering students get minimalexposure to throughout the remainder of their required curricula. Common assignments eachsemester include a Resume Critique, Graduation Plan, and an Engineering Challenges paperwhere students detail the motivations for completing their engineering degree and the challengesthey anticipate in the coming years. Student comments show that the Engineering Challengesassignment in particular really helped give them a “reality check” and exposed shortcomings intheir study habits or their school-work-home balance. Evaluation techniques for the courseinclude

The research group also plan to develop additional modules basedon other engineering discipline (such as chemical, mechanical, or civil engineering).Due to a small sample size and a low percent of underrepresented groups in the course, theauthors were unable to analyze the data by gender, ethnicity, or entry level (first semester versussecond semester or above). However, we plan to implement the module in Fall 2015 in a largernumber of students, which will allow for a more in depth analysis of the data and of the impactof the module in students’ confidence, and interest in engineering. Conclusion:Losing nearly half of talented first year engineering students is not acceptable and more

semester-long projects by the end of the term. Formany years, non-completion of projects or personality problems within teams was rare – perhapsone out of a hundred per semester. Recently, more teams have been having trouble, and thecourse has been growing as well. For instance, we had 15 cases of non-completion in Fall 2013and 11 cases in Spring 2014. In our summer 2014 planning meetings, we decided that somethingneeded to be done to address teamwork as a learnable skill because it is such an integral part ofengineering. In our opinion, the higher rate of non-completion was mostly due to current students havingdifficulties with communicating face-to-face; the skill set required to discuss how to jointly dotheir projects is sorely lacking in

of 2014. The number of students who enrolled as mechanical engineeringmajors was double the anticipated number and created some anxiety on resourcing the newprogram in subsequent years. As a new mechanical engineering program being offered for the first time in the fall of 2014, notall of the planned faculty has yet been hired to fulfill the needs of the program or the student’sinterests. It is critical that the current faculty communicate with the students about theconstraints facing a new program. For instance, the number of current faculty must match therequired teaching load based on the student population. Similarly, hiring faculty to oversee anddevelop one of the focus areas may not be necessary if there is little student interest or

For instance, an event that did not require advanced planning on the part of thestudent and could be completed at any time (i.e. – reading and reviewing a technical paper) wascoded as “highly convenient” while a career fair that has a set date but drop-in hours was codedas “medium convenience”. It is based onimportant theoretical insights into the nature of learning and the determinants of academicperformance7 which have been used by several studies. Self-regulated learning is an integratedlearning process, which consists of behavior growth that affects students’ learning. committee then wanted to know what the students thought. The committee designeda detailed survey for engineering students who had already taken the introductory coursesequence to better understand what they actually learned and how useful they felt it was as theyprogressed through their respective programs (year 2 through 4 students). Along with the general survey the committee wanted to talk to students directly, and partof the plan was to conduct a focus group of selected upper class students in each department tosurvey their feelings about potential program redesigns based on their experiences with theoriginal program. professional and personal backgrounds.Engineering schools and departments play a very important but often implicit role in thedevelopment of an engineering identity by students. By giving deliberate attention to theengineering identity development of our students we can help participate in these three processesin ways that result in the more inclusive attitudes and practices that are needed in modernengineering. We plan to shape our students’ perceptions of engineers and engineering byshowing them that in order to do their work engineers must learn a variety of skills. This showsbeginning engineers that technical knowledge alone is not enough to design high qualitysolutions. We want to teach our students how to interact with each other in ways that

The transition to student autonomy may haveoccurred too rapidly for these students. Most students seemed to better understand why the PI learning experience was designed as itwas by mid-semester, suggesting that some of the initial faculty concerns about studentconfusion may have been exaggerated. The time and pace required for this transition will be anobvious area of research moving forward.Nevertheless, it became clear that a full four year curriculum design was needed to help studentsconceptualize how they would move through the program and how their current work would tieto long-term academic and professional goals
