effort, a team of computerscience students developed a web based route selection application as a seniordesign project. This concept involved building a website that utilizes the Googlemapping utility to allow individuals to “plan” their trip on METS. Potential riderssimply input their starting point and destination. The application determines thebus route and provides a map with a textual description, including transfer pointsand fare information, of the recommended route. additionalmaterials to complement the simulation. In this paper, we provide examples of an inquiry-basedapproach within a lean simulation of a clock assembly process, and also provide examples ofcomplementary activities that can be used with the simulation. We characterize the use of thelean simulation in an engineering course at five universities as being either inquiry-oriented ormore directed, and explore the impact on students’ evaluation of their proficiency in lean and interms of their ability to define lean. The preliminary results suggest that greater inquiryincreases students’ assessment of their proficiency, as well as an improved ability to define lean.In future analysis, we plan to characterize the use of materials at the universities

mathematical statistics. As with the Stochastic Modeling course,approximately ¼ of the semester is spent reviewing how to apply these prerequisites in anindustrial or service application. One of the first reinforcement activities for this course includes an in-class review exercisefor hypothesis testing. This exercise includes a review and reinforcing application practice onhypothesis tests and distribution yield; distribution assumption checks; single sample acceptanceplans; and MIL STD 105E acceptance plan operations. The in-class exercise has the studentsdevelop a decision-table for selecting the most appropriate hypothesis test for a range ofsituations. toenhance their learning experience and their grasp of the subject matter.A limitation of this study was the small sample size and the random student volunteers fromdifferent educational backgrounds, which increased the variability in the experiment results.Another limitation of the study is that we used identical exam questions to test the student’sunderstanding. Although same questions are commonly used in pre- and post- test method, thefact that the students in Group 2 has seen the exam questions before during Post-lab exam mayhad lead to improvement due to the familiarity with the exam questions, rather than due to theexperiences of the multimodal lab. One plan to address this problem is to use essay questionsrather than calculation questions
