-level measurements & instrumentation course (for anElectrical and Computer Engineering Technology program), students are required to design andimplement an elevator control system project. The elevator simulator is pre-built and equipped witha car that travels through three floors, a car hoist system that uses a 12-volt DC motor, floor sensorsto detect the position of the car, and an elevator call pushbutton on each floor. Terminal strips areprovided for I/O connections. Students are required to use a National Instruments data acquisitionsystem with analog I/O and digital I/O capability. The objective of the project is for students todesign the software (using LabVIEW) and hardware interfacing electronics for the simulatedelevator control

ElectricalEngineering and Mechanical Engineering Plans of Study. An overview of the course and it’splacement within a vehicle system option in electrical and mechanical engineering is outlined asa context for the data acquisition and control laboratory activities. Course instruction presentsvehicle data acquisition applications while including discussions on the operation and testing of ageneric electric vehicle drive train. An internal combustion vehicle and a vehicle chassisdynamometer are also used in the laboratory experience.A sample laboratory project and assessment discussion is presented. An assessment datasummary is also provided for the previous offering of the course along with the larger setting ofengineering professionalism data in electrical and

The student’s undergraduate backgroundwas computer science, so he had little to no actual hardware experience. Furthermore, the studenthad never been exposed to experimental research. Fortunately, the student put forth the effort tolearn the necessary components related to the research, and successfully completed the project.Feedback from the student indicated that he not only learned from this project, but the projectalso helped him understand and related unfamiliar subjects he was

energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. As mentionedearlier, sensor networks are an enabling technology for many applications that can increaseenergy efficiency. The Office of Electricity Delivery & Energy Reliability (OE) has $4.5 billiondollars for Smart Grid and efficient energy transmission projects. Sensor network technology isthe enabling technology for the Smart Grid. The DOE has already called for proposals from theelectrical power distribution industry to begin the long needed up-grade of the aging electricalgrid infrastructure in the United States. Recently, matching funds in the amount of $3.4 billiondollars were awarded to approximately 100 Smart Grid Investment Grant applicants by OE2.Some in this industry have termed

Laboratories in Vans Driven to Distance Sites. This equipment is driven to the distance sites. Some community colleges use vans to teach labs at distance sites. The problem with this method is that it allows access to equipment for a limited time, making it difficult to accomplish more than competency based tasks. The California Distance Learning Project states that these types of mobile labs are becoming less popular as distributed learning increases. 3 G. Smaller Portable

AbstractThis paper reports the results of the development and implementation of hands-on laboratoryexperiments in a newly developed laboratory for a two-semester undergraduate course inInstrumentation and Measurements in Mechanical Engineering. The course, designed for theundergraduate junior level, was a two-semester course for a total of four credits, and it took placein conjunction with a one-hour classroom lecture in mechanical engineering. A modified versionof this approach, however, can easily be used at all levels of the mechanical engineeringcurriculum. An important component to the process involves the utilization of a two-semesterlong, open-ended project (OEP) that required the students to come up with creative approaches toproblem solving

We emphasize that IVLP is still in its prototype stageand requires further testing and enhancements and this paper only reflects our initial results. The rest of this paper is organized as follow. In Section 2 we briefly describe the basic coursedelivery model used in IVLP. In Section 3 we describe the architecture and then we go over thelayout and implementation of IVLP and provide details about individual modules of the system. Page 15.45.22.
