graduate studies, and initially worked through language and culturaldifferences. She started doing CER in the third year of her graduate studies. She saw anannouncement from the university about a program on outreach and engagement offered by thegraduate school. They offered summer intensive training and certification in communityengagement for graduate students. She elected to participate because it seemed like a greatopportunity that was well-aligned with her dissertation research which required her to go into thecommunity to collect environmental samples.
