After completing a PhD at Lehigh University in Industrial Engineering in 2000, he joined the optoelectronics center at Lucent Technologies/Agere Systems as a member of technical staff. He received a M.E degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and a B.E. degree in Mechatronics from Xidian University, Xian, China.
